Delving to next floor - Am I understanding incorrectly?

I'm reading the rules and I see that going to the next floor, you are supposed to eat one food and refresh your character card. However, playing with 2 people, we've often noticed that one of our abilities doesn't refresh. As an example, we made it to the boss on one of the floors (without using Conjuration on the Mage or Backstab on the Rogue) and only one of us could use our character ability. When it went to the next player, they were unable to use their character ability.

Does this ability refresh only after bosses, or each time you go down one floor? Am I just understanding the rules incorrectly?

When you say "one of our abilities doesn't refresh", I wonder if that might be the source of the confusion? Did you use your exploration abilities earlier on the floor and expect to be able to use your combat abilities against the boss? Because if you use *either* of your abilities, your whole character card gets flipped over, so *both* your abilities go offline until the next floor (or you find a bonfire)

This explains my confusion. Thank you so much. I had assumed you can use BOTH abilities!
