Why do some users play >50 games simultaneously

Several times I have encountered users who play a lot of games at once. Often with the speed "1 move per day".
What specifically caught my attention is that such regime is applied to games that are generally played fast: Ticket to train, Carcassonne, Bang!, etc.
Is this some way of farming something? What do they gain? Is it ok on bga, and can I do that?

Yes, it's ok. If it weren't ok BGA could easily cap the number of games (as they do for new accounts). Some people just like to have a lot of games going. It's a preference. I don't do it. I prefer live games, or turn-based games with people I know where we will sometimes agree to jump online at the same time to finish it off.

Other people prefer hundreds (I'm not exaggerating) of simultaneous turn-based games. As long as they aren't timing out or otherwise affecting you, why should anyone care? Some people claim that extreme multi-tabling does impact coop and/or deduction games, but if so that would count as affecting you.

As I said above, I think new accounts are limited in the number of simultaneous turn-based games, but that limit increases over time.

What do they gain?

With respect to what?

With respect to having a single game, they don't need to wait hours/days to make their next move: they can immediately (or whenever they please) make another move in another table.

With respect to playing at faster speeds, they don't commit themselves to logging in several times a day to take their turn: they can still log in once a day and take a turn at each table.

With respect to playing in real time, they don't need to be online waiting for other players to move, and they can think their moves longer.

Personally, I hate turn-based and play real-time whenever possible.

I have two young kids. Typically when I try to play real-time, inevitably, chaos happens and I get distracted and end up timing out and getting booted. OK, this doesn't happen every time, but has happened enough that, if my kids are around, I don't tend to play real-time. So I play mostly turn-based games. Lately, it's around 30-40, but used to be around 60-80. I'd come online to play in the mornings and have maybe 30-40 (or more) games to play through, so I'd play through some over breakfast, often all of them (I mean, sometimes your move in TTR is just to draw two cards, and in about 10 seconds you're on to the next game). I'd check them later when I took a break from work, at lunchtime, in the afternoon, after work, over dinner, before bed. There'd always be at least a few games to play, usually a good dozen or so. So it worked for me. Lately, I'd backed off my play count a bit, as some other interests have been taking some of my down time, but I still like a good number of turns to play when I have some time, but without the pressure of maintaining focus for 30-60 min (or longer). So that's my reasons.

I really can't see what the issue is? If you are playing a turn-based game and all players are taking their turns in the time frame relevant to the game - does it make any difference to you if that is their only game or one of 500?

Some human beings are incredibly short on empathy. When they encounter a behaviour they don't engage in themselves they assume some nefarious purpose must be at work and they race here to get confirmation for their narrow view of the world. The internet just makes that much more obvious that real life.

To answer the questions directly:

No, it is not about farming - unless you count trying to improve ELO as farming which some people are competitive about.

What do they gain? What does anyone gain playing board games on BGA? Just the enjoyment of playing games really.

Is it ok on BGA? Clearly. Otherwise there would be rules stopping it.

Can I do that? Of course. But what would you gain?

Personally I usually have about 20-30 turn based games on the go. That fits in with my daily routine - I regularly get 10-15 minutes when I can play a turn in a few games. It is rarer that I get more than half an hour at a time I can devote to playing - when I do I will play a real-time game. That fits my life. Other people play in a way that suits their life. If they stick to time limits, it's hurting nobody.
