I think this is the right forum for suggestions even concerning tournaments...
1) Score in tournaments
A few real life examples:
(I'm simplifying)
Ex1) In footbal (soccer) championships, some countries give 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
At the end, whoever has the more points wins
Ex2) In Bridge championships by Team, each hand will receive an IMP score and at the end of each match you lookup the difference of IMP between the teams on a table (table depends on the number of hands played) and this gives the victory points for both team (the total is always 30 except in extreme cases). At the end of the championship, the team with the most victory points win. The number of matches won is irrelevant and a 14-16 loss is therefore nearly as good as a 16-14 win.
Ex3) In formula 1, there was a time (I have no idea how it works now) where first car would get 9 points, second would get 6, 3rd would get 4 points etc... And at the end of the year, pilot with the most points win. And for the competition by team, you simply add the points of the pilots of each team and compare the points of each team.
It would be nice if games in BGA could do such things for their tournaments.
--------------------------------
2) Tie-breakers in tournaments
This can be a bit more tricky but if you go back to the football example, you might want to use the goal average as one of the tie-breaker criterias.
This would of course require to add the goal average throughout the championship.
In a bridge championship, the tie-breaker might be whoever won the most games with a 25-0 score (and technically something like 50 similar tie-breaking rule if that one isn't enough...) or it could be the results of the matchs that opposed the teams that are ex-aequo...
It would again be nice if such things where possible in BGA.
-------------------------------------------
3) "Bye" and adjudicated scores
Adjudication:
Ex2) In a bridge tournament by Pairs, if a hand could not be played fairly for whatever reason at a table, the referee will often adjudicate the hand and either give 60% to both teams if no team is at fault or a 60%/40% split score if one team is at fault. (Causes will vary, maybe one team played to slowly which made it impossible to play the hand or maybe someone in the room made a comment that was heard at the table and that gave information that should have been secret or whatever...) At the end of the tournament, this adjudicated score can be refined; for instance, if team A received an adjudicated 60% score but their average for actually played hands at the end of the championship is 64%, that 60% will be increased to 64%.
It would be nice if tournament admins/referees could adjudicate scores in some situations for specific games or maybe just games specific rules for the automatic adjudication of games that could not be completed in time.
Giving a lot more powers to tournament admins would no doubt create some complaints of unfairness so I guess this part should be handled as a separate suggestion from the rest...
Bye:
This is what happen when a tournament is played in multiple rounds but some people cannot play one of the rounds because the number of players in the tournament isn't just right.
For instance, in a 2 players game round robin or swiss system tournament with 23 people, there will always be someone not playing.
Note that this isn't the same thing as not playing because the opponent never came at the table but can sometimes be handled in the same way.
Here too, it would be nice to allow games to define what exact score is given to the player that wins by default. (With the bridge by pairs example above, that player typically gets a 60% score for that hand and it can be corrected at the end of the tournament same as for the adjudication)
------------------------
4) Multiple options and applicability
All of the above was thought mostly for round-robin tournaments.
You might allow the game to define their rules differently for other types of tournaments.
For instance, it is common in swiss system tournament to have a tie breaker that takes into account the level or final score or elo ranking or whatever of the teams against which everyone played.
So ideally, a game could define multiple scoring systems, some limited to some types of tournaments and some not and the tournament organizer would be allowed to select one of the available scoring systems (including of course the default BGA one).
