How to get power and super power?

I filled in a column and then later a row and I never got a power or a super power -- is there some trick to getting this ability?

Made it hard to win.

Answering my own question, I believe the reason it did not "work" is because you have to fill in the row and column with cards added to the board. There can't be any original icons showing. This is not clear in the quick rules -- I'm going to edit the wiki.

So far, most of the characters have a provided symbol in every row or column. So I can’t earn a power or superpower.

You must fill up a row or column with polyominoes (even if there are blanks on them). Sometimes you’ll have to cover up icons that your grid started with so that you’ll be able to…

I have gotten error messages when I have tried to cover up icons. Maybe they were on polyominoes. I’ll try again.
