Please add an option to ban the eagle

Post by megrim2019 »

There are enough threads. There is a consensus. Please add the house option to ban the eagle. The card is imbalanced and every player knows it. You either take it, or lose.

No, that would be a custom rule not approved by the publisher.

Yes, there have been several.
There is a consensus.
No, there is no such consensus.

Eagles are only broken in games where both players dance around 99 points waiting for the opponent to cross. I loved to do this when I was a beginner too but if you start playing for tempo and try to cross fast you will realize they are a bit overrated.

This is just patently false. Discard it from your opening hand and nobody even knows its in the discard. Odds of it coming back are miniscule.

I think the point being made was that if it's in the row and you leave it for your opponents then you lose.

Even that is only situational.

1.) They need the money for it.
2.) They need the enclosure for it.
3.) It will take at least 2 turns.

I would love statistics, but in most of the games I have seen, the extra turns via Eagles or Sun Bear made the difference.
The setup for those cards is not so difficult, since it's mostly targeted for the end game where you have most of it already present (partner zoo for sun bear or enclosure for the eagles).

Is there an API available that we can use to query the game statistics to either prove or disproof the claim?

I want this too but I don't think we'll ever get it. Really curious about the specific winrates of some cards like side entrance or explorer.

If that data point or API was available, it would only be able to affirm the hyperbolic claims (i.e. "take it or lose it") are false. For example, it can be disproved by finding one game where player X played card Y, and player X lost. The data point would not be able to prove or disprove claims that player X playing card Y affects player's X win position most of the time. To reach that conclusion, one would need to use more advance techniques, such as AI (e.g. Monte Carlo tree search) to determine the cards significance to the game outcome.
