It's curious we can't signaling a player because supicious of cheating ?

Post by Maarken »

I don't know how the website is resistant against cheating, but sometime, some player had an extremly luck in game and for me it's suspicious.
And even i we can red flag theese player with any reason, it's curious that it's not in the violation of the terms use, to be suspected of cheat ...

Cordially

So a player had a lucky game and your immediate thought is they must have somehow cheated? Not that they just had a lucky game? Probability means that eventually every combination of dice rolls will happen somewhere. So someone will have a game where they roll 20 sixes in a row. That doesn't mean they cheated, it just means they had a lucky day. You probably have had similarly lucky days in games you've played, but they don't register because you're focused on the fact that you won, not necessarily how well the dice rolled (or cards drew, or whatever). People also tend to attribute their own successes to skill and their failures to bad luck.

So no, there is no mechanism for reporting "suspicious" games due to high luck. Typically cheating involves other means - eg. playing against a dummy account to boost your ELO, blocking high-ranking Arena players to enable yourself to maintain a higher Arena ranking - and those are observable as a pattern over time. If you observe that kind of a pattern, feel free to keep good records and report it, but cheating is usually not observable within a single game.

Seriously ... Next time you want to answer a thread, PLEASE, read it before. The meaning of "tcheating" is very obvious for those taking 30 second to read more than the title.

Since getting lucky isn't cheating, it is natural for the person to be confused after reading your post if you were complaining about something else called tcheating.

It was a straight and serious question. I even went to both Google and Urban Dictionary to see if it was some slang term I hadn't heard before. I wasn't rude, I wasn't mocking him or insulting him (like you just did, and I just did to you).

Second, it was spelled that way consistently, three times. (Well, once for "tcheat") If it was just an inconsistent typo, I'd just let it slide without comment.

Third, I don't see Moderator tags on you. Step off. If you think someone's making a rude post to someone else, refer it to the Moderators instead of taking it into your own hands. (I'd understand it if you were defending yourself, but even then, you would still be unreasonably rude there.)

ok so when a player have more luck than the probability of winning lotery, it's not cheat, just luck even if every move during all the game are performed with luck, not only sometime having good luck, you don't think it's suspicious ?

To me it's suspcious, and it's not really a cheat, but will consider good to signal to administrator to verify it by themself.

If you have a good reason to think that someone's cheating, definitely report it.

That said... if your only suspicion is that the random numbers/events in the game favored one player, that's not going to be enough, and you will be wasting your time and the moderators. That really isn't a good reason. Some of our longest-running and most heated threads in the forums are because people don't think that (X game)'s results were the right kind of randomness.

Random number generators can be more irrational than you think.

(X game is usually Catan.)

I'm going to need more context than this, in what way were they lucky? I see you're mostly playing Ark Nova, did the new cards fit their strategy better than yours? in the case the potential reasons are:
1) They used a strategy that was more flexible and more able to take advantage of whatever was revealed.
2) They somehow modified the code on the server for that specific game to force whatever card they wanted to be drawn.
3) They were someone able to access the server and look at the code for their specific game to see what cards were coming up
4) They were legitimately just lucky.

Options 2 and 3 are impossible or near impossible. For option 4 you need to consider how likely it is for someone to get as lucky as your opponent was in your game. Is it only a 1% chance? I'm currently seeing 1000 tables playing Ark Nova right now (https://boardgamearena.com/gametables?game=arknova) so if it is a 1% chance, at 10 of those tables someone is getting that lucky right now. If it's only a .1% chance that is still happening to one person at any given time.
