Please leave it to the natives

Post by SimplicatusGames »

I'm really impressed with the general quality of everything here on BGA. I'd like to remind everyone about the first sentence of the translation guidelines though:
Important: to translate you need to be a native speaker of the target language.
Previously, there were fewer Norwegians playing on BGA and it's not a huge language. There are still many games lacking translation to Norwegian. However, practically ALL Norwegians understand English very well. So it's better IMHO to leave a text untranslated than to translate it badly.

I've seen many examples of Norwegian text that has obviously been translated by non-native speakers; I see the mistakes, and then I check the account of the translator and discover that they're not Norwegians with bad grammar, but non-native speakers that understand Norwegian well and obviously want to help, but they don't know it well enough to make correct translations.

I think that helping out small languages with few active native speakers was probably much more important 4 or more years ago. But after the "pandemic explosion", there are many more Norwegians on here than before. I'll gladly contact my fellow Norwegians and ask them if they'd like to step up.

There's also a lot of auto-translated text done by BGA with Google Translate, and cleaning that up is par for the course. But I'd rather not have to fix incorrect text that I know somebody else already got gift points for translating, while I don't because the translation has already been approved...

TL;DR: Please don't translate to Norwegian just to get gift points if you're not really sure if you're able to translate correctly...

På forhånd tusen takk! :-)
