Settings are picked by game gurus (people who played a given game a lot in the previous season, even if they never play in arena).

Yep, I guess my post was more asking them. It doesn't make a whole of sense.

Maybe it makes sense if they don't play Arena and value novelty over competitiveness/fairness.

So frustrating. Arena mode is explicitly supposed to be competitive play. If fairness doesn't matter, why not throw in board 8? :lol:
