registered for tournament but not able to join game

Post by oenxt »

Hello - i registered for a Captain Flip tournament and tried to start but could find no way to join any game - i also received a message that i won a game, but had not even played! Then i tried to ask about it, but i called my own self "dumb" and got a warning for that! With no alternative, i withdrew from the tournament and received a penalty! What is going on? Why was there no way to see or join in the tournament? I am sure it is just my ignorance, but some basic instructions on how that works should be available!

You were in a single-elimination bracket tournament. Unless the number of entries is an exact power of 2, at least one person is going to get a first-round bye.

You can see here https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=308095 that you got a bye in Match 39 of the first round. I'm guessing that's why it said you had won. What you had to do is wait for the winner of the first round that fed into your second-round match. In other words, you were supposed to wait for Match 40 to finish (which could take up to 10 days for this tournament) and play the winner of that match.

Tournaments are not Arena. You don't just join one then immediately start playing. They have a specific start time (which is shown on the page you register for it) and a maximum round length. You will often have to wait on the results of a round before you can start the next round. In some formats (Swiss), you must wait for all matches in a round to finish before the next round begins.

Go to the tournament page, and scroll down towards the bottom of the page to see the games.

Presumably it's this tournament: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=308095

In the first game you were game 39. You had no opponent - you qualified for the next round automatically. This is because of how BGA has set up the tournament (automatically) to ensure the number of players in the tournament divided by 2 allows for 1 final game.

In the next round, you were to be in game 20. Your opponent would have been the winner from game 40 in the first round. You quit the tournament before that happened.

Thank you - I was sure that I just didn't understand how it worked, so your answers were very helpful. I did try to find out more information before I started, but couldn't find that anywhere - is it posted somewhere on the site?

It's all on the tournament page where you signed-up to it / withdrew from it. All tournament settings are at the top, and all the games were at the bottom of the page once it began.

I'd recommend using the tournament-wall post feature, or the tournament-chat feature to ask fellow-participants questions if you don't understand the listed settings.
