Turn based games limit and reputation

Post by Hefesto1337 »

I recently had a rough week at work and couldnt play much. I played maybe 1-2 actions each 24 hours at each table, it wasn't like I didnt log in at all, but people got impatient...

I had around 20 tables and I got reported in 4 of them so my reputation went down like crazy to 20% (I always kept 100% reputation for many months)

I wanted to play Terraforming Mars arena this season and after 3-4 days of getting my rep up i finally reach 65% then I find that I cannot join more turn based tables since my limit is 10.

However at the moment I am playing at 15 tables or so so I wont be able to play terraforming mars arena.

At which point does the limit go off? To be honest, it's a bit annoying that after a couple of days of not being able to log in I just get karma smashed and almost banned from the site despite i maintained 100% reputation for months...

Now i know that Time jokers exist though

EDIT: I have searched this exact question in google and BGA forums and couldnt find anything that's why i created a new thread

I understand your frustration, but I want to comment on some points

It's not that they got impatient. You failed to play your moves within the allotted time, and someone else rightfully expelled you. The other players have lives too and they also get frustrated when another player doesn't comply with the time settings.
I got reported in 4 of them
Most likely you were not reported. You were just expelled. Nothing to be much worried about.
However at the moment I am playing at 15 tables or so so I wont be able to play terraforming mars arena.
You'll be able when you finish some current tables. Or you can play in real-time. Or, if the limit is linked to karma (which I don't know), when you increase your karma. There are very fast ways to get your karma back.

You won't be banned even if your karma drops to 0. From the other players' perspective, they have the right to know that you might be "not able to log in for a couple of days", that's what karma says. It's not a judgment on you as a person, don't take it too seriously.

Well let's refrain from an useless debate about what's right and wrong and let's see if someone can share with us at which karma does the limit go off.

I will say just one thing: running out of time in real time games is for sure annoying, since you have limited time to play and maybe you have to leave after the game... it's pretty clear that live games have to abide by time constraints.

However, I don't understand how going red in turn based games is annoying.

Sure, if you just abandon the game and then your time depletes that's bad behaviour.

But being behind in time because you had an unexpected event during a day and couldn't play? Well, seems like a bit excessive to me but ok looks like we think different and that's ok.

Here's why it's annoying: suppose I join a turn-based game where I figure that there will be three or four turns a day. That speed lets me remember my plans, strategy, and general thoughts about the table from move to move. But if somebody doesn't log in for 24 hours so my next turn doesn't come up until more than a day later, then I will probably have forgotten all my thoughts about what's going on this game (what my plans are and what I perceive my opponents' plans to be) so maybe I have to read the whole game log or watch a replay from the beginning. That's not what I signed up for.

That's why I get annoyed!

Also, it may be that I know I'll have time this week to be logging in to BGA a few times each day, but next week I'll be busy with real life. So if I start a game with time constraints that mean it should be completed within a week, but one player exceeds the time limit so that the game spills into next week, then that also is annoying.

I play turn based games and usually only have 2 or 3 going at a time, so if someone doesn't take their turns within the time limit I notice because now I'm not playing at all while waiting for this person.

If you want to play turn based but are unsure you can commit to specific times then consider setting to infinite time aka a friendly game when creating the table. Then the table won’t get timed out until around 14 or 28 days without a move.

I agree with other posters, if I think I’ve got a week ahead to play turn based then I’ll pick a game/speed to suit. I’ve played very few turn based games incl tournaments because my work life is busy and I can’t be checking games every few hours to see if someone played (plus playing on a phone is a poor experience for most games). I get stressed by turn based games for the corollary of the OP post!

Karma will bounce back. Just play 10 short live games in an hour of something like Can’t Stop. Bingo.

I played a tournament turn base game, Castle of burgundy. My last play was at 4:45 p.m. The next player came to play at 1:22 a.m. the next day then the third player played. Then at 6:21 a.m. the third player skipped my turn which was the very last turn of mine. Between 4:45 p.m. to 1:22 a.m., that's over 8 hours of me waiting (went to bed around 1:00 a.m.). I was cruelly skipped my turn (my very last turn) before I woke up. Even the other player puzzled why the third player had to do that. I don't think I deserve to be penalized because of the time differences among countries. Being skipped the very last turn was crazy. Playing for many games I never skip anyone. I played till the end even I was losing. The rules of skipping players turn needed to be evaluated. I need my deduction points back.

There was no technical malfunction of the site, so the only way you're getting your karma back is by completing games.

In the tournament in question the playing hours were as follows:
Playing hours

0:00 → 12:00
That's in my time zone. That would have been translated to your local time zone in the tournament registration page. Apparently the playing hours weren't compatible with your sleeping hours, but this was not hidden information. Ultimately, you chose to play with these parameters, even if you didn't closely pay attention to them.

I may agree that it was unsportsmanlike conduct to expel you in these circumstances, but just because I wouldn't do it doesn't mean it was "wrong" in the sense that it violated the site terms of use/service.
