I am aware of how the game works/that blue tickets are not re-shuffled....
Doesn't seem so, Idk what game you have been playing, but in TTR Europe all the ticket cards have the same back, therefore it's impossibile to distinguish long tickets from the others when putting them back into the box
You're mistaken, unless this is an update to new printings of the game, in the edition of the game I own (and presumably what OP is used to) the long routes DO have a blue back, they don't match the rest of the card backs, so it is very obvious whether someone keeps their long route or not when playing OTB.

Here's an image of the card backs on Board Game Geek:

Hi Kaladry,

I had bougth the TTR Europe the first year it was sold in France and I confirm :
- The standard destination cards have their back brown.
- The big destination cards have their back blue.

But I have also bougth the Days of Wonder Ticket To Ride Europe 15th Anniversary Edition Ltd Ed and in this case all the destination cards have their back with the same blue.

Best regards Menettm. ;)

Hi
I found this topic interesting and would be interested by the final status from the original poster.
Just to clarify one point, in the link above with the backs on BGG, the blue back is not for the long tickets but for the longest route 10points bonus. This is what the caption states and is consistent with what I found in my box where all ticket cards now have the same back and the bonus still has this blue back.

Valerio,
[/b] The tickets you decide to keep are held until the end of the game
The idea is that, during a regular game OTB at home and with friends, these^^ kept tickets are visible to other players. Thus, by simply noticing whether an opponent OTB has a blue-backed ticket in front of them or not, you can know whether they had kept their blue ticket or not. I understand that it might supposed to be all secret all around, but in a regular OTB game people usually are not consistent with fully hiding their tickets, as hiding one's tickets is not something that a player needs to do in any other T2R game version at all.

So you are right--what is put in the box is easy to be kept secret, and usually is not a problem to do. But it is what is kept that is usually harder to keep secret (human error), and which has always played a part in my strategy, in T2R Europe; and which, is not represented in the online version.

Blessings,
SM

Hi
What you're saying is only true with an old edition of the game. Try with a recent edition, all cards now have the same back so your strategy is not possible anymore.
