Arena games where only one player can gain anything

Post by wrldtrvllr »

I find it grossly unfair and an affront to the idea of a league system to be given an opponent far enough below me that I cannot actually gain any arena points by winning. What is the point in such a match-up? It's a total waste of my time. A game in which one player cannot win anything but can lose a lot while the other player cannot lose anything but can win a lot should simply not be a possibility.

Strictly speaking you always gain something. The system keep tracks of gain/loss up to 0.01 points. In the ranking only integer digits are shown, so
if your gain is very small most likely it will not show up. Eventually after many 0.01 wins you will see your ranking jumping up by one point.

At present you don't have ways out. You can sort opponents by levels but level mean league, thus if you reach elite, you have no way to avoid
strongly unbalanced games.

You might consider to post a suggestion to add a filter based on EAS (arena points) difference rather than on league difference.

It is true that I did still gain one or two ranking points. But I don't think arena points are anything but integers. If I played and won 100 games against opponents three divisions below me, I would still gain absolutely no arena points. A league game which cannot possibly benefit the league standing of one of the players is just completely unfair and should not happen.

You gain AES points, but those will be hidden until (if) you reach Elite. Before that, I'm pretty sure the shields are just integers, and 0 means 0.

Ok, but this can be avoided. You can change your settings and ask not to be matched against opponents too far in leagues.
What I meant is that, if you manage to climb to elite than all games will contribute to your standing also those games which didn't contribute to
your advancing in leagues.

Do the consecutive win penalties apply in Arena points as well?

This post convinces me ELO ruins games. Why is the fun of playing a NOTHING at all? If you get so good at a game, it becomes no more fun. The joy of playing is gone, and all anyone cares about is the ELO.

This post isn't about ELO

It's about arena league shields that you need to move up to the next level

Some people enjoy going up the leagues so for them the game is less fun if they're matched against an opponent whose ranking does not allow them to progress

You have to be 3 or more levels away from an opponent to not gain any benefit, which implies there needs be at least four levels of league in a game, which there aren't in a lot of games that I've seen (or maybe I just play games without so many leagues). On top of that, as already mentioned, you can restrict your opponents to within a range that is less than this - so if it's a problem in a specific game, then just make sure to change it (annoyingly you have to do this for each game you want this to apply to, but once done, it should no longer be a problem).

The option to restrict games to opponents near your level refers to Elo, not to arena leagues, so it's not possible to avoid this situation.
