I don't think I've ever had someone I've beaten say "gg" to me.
Only ever get it when I lose.
Feels like a taunt in my opinion, but that's just me.

I have often seen the losing player saying gg or "thanks for the game"--and I mean initiating it, not just in response--and I 100% give them a green thumb because it indicates they were socialized through sports or other means to accept a loss gracefully.

It's cultural, but sports are not necessarily a good indicator: competitivity can play a great role in feeling a respectful word as a taunt. Michael Jordan said something along the way that"If you respect me as an opponent, you will disrespect me on the playground".
Now, that's totally alien to me, but the take exists, so whatever rude I feel the answer is, as long as it's not insulting (and that I'm in an OK mood), I won't take it too harshly.

That's a nice cherry-picked counterexample, but I think it's uncontroversial that, among other reasons (such as health benefits, etc.), parents involve their children in sports to build character traits such as resiliency in the face of negative outcomes, e.g., losing. I never said it's guaranteed that you will learn this through sports or that it's the only way to learn it (which is why I referred to "other means").

Thanks for all those comments - I understand it a bit more now, I guess - but yes, I think we should be friendly and respectful to our random and unknown game partners in the same way we would in real life playing with friends. And for me, this includes something at start and end of the game.

I've seen it multiple times. And I'm on this site for only a few weeks now.

(Personally I use 'Thanks for the game' though, regardless of who won.)
