It might work for other players who use it, which would be a lot of work for so few players.

Maybe another easier way would be to auto-write a message in the chat at the beginning of the game, to inform the other players that you won't be seeing any more messages.
So you don't want to have to see other people's chats but you think it's okay to spam everyone in every game you play informing them that you've decided to not respond should anyone send you a message!

No message should be auto sent. If anyone posts in an ingame chat, there is no requirement to respond/answer so why the need to inform everyone you aren't going to reply should any be sent.

I've no clue how hard this would be to program, but perhaps:
Don't send that message to start, but send it once if the opponent sends a message in chat.

When I talk to a player in chat (especially in a cooperative game), I expect them to respond to me, even if it's to tell me that they don't want to chat.
It's just being polite, IMO.
Don't send that message to start, but send it once if the opponent sends a message in chat.
This seems better (especially for non-cooperative games). This required more work, but it should be possible to listen for new chat messages , and thus reply to the first one.

I'm not against this extension at all- just wanted to offer my perspective... I enjoy seeing even a simple "gla" (good luck all!) or "gg" or "good game" in the chatbox while playing games. Or other congratulatory or complimentary messages. Even these simple messages help foster good will and makes games more fun! Plus, chatting among players can actually be a big part of some games!

I can understand that some days you just don't feel up to any chatting. That's kind of similar to real life. :) But perhaps when we feel that way, it might brighten our day to extend some good will to others!

I wonder though- would it be possible & feasible to hide individual messages if we see something negative? and maybe send a chat to warn that you ignored / blocked their message- maybe even have another feature to block messages from that one user... although I'm a fan of giving a second chance to folks... :)

Great extension, really helpful for when I just want to play a quick game in silence or when I am unfortunate enough to get an immature opponent who just spams the chat with randomness to distract or annoy his opponents on purpose. Very happy to have found your extension, thank you! 🤝

I do agree that it might become annoying if the extension sends a macro to the chat saying that I've muted my messages. Maybe BGA developers could collab with you and add an icon next to the player's username when the chat is muted on their side? It seems there are many people who would love this to be an official feature of BGA. Maybe it would be helpful to start a petition on the forum and see how far it would get? :) For now I've just added a disclaimer in my bio about this extension. However, it probably hasn't become an official feature because there might be just as many people who feel that it is impolite to not respond. Can't please everyone. But still it is good that those who do want to mute their chat for a while have that option.

---
upd: this extension, for me, hides the chat during the game but when I get out of the game it plays the sound and sort of shows a glimpse of the chat tab for a second. So it doesn't really mute the game chat completely, just hides it.

apozem wrote: 10 June 2023, 19:17 Hello! I wanted to let everyone know I made a simple browser extension to hide the chat and stop notification sounds on BGA. Perfect for days where you don't feel like talking to strangers.

The extension includes options to hide the site-wide general chat, per-table chat, private messages, or notification sounds. Click its icon in your browser window to enable and disable the extension. It doesn't access your account or stop people from sending you messages, it just stops them from appearing in your browser.

Works with Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

This is my first version of the extension, so if you try it, please let me know how it could be improved!
Superb! First-class - enabled immediately and has improved BGA experience totally. Well done.

As somebody who chats a bunch: if I say something in chat and the person doesn't respond, it comes across as rude, and I'm absolutely not alone in thinking that. As for a message saying that a person has muted chat being "spam," that is NOT the case--loads of people send messages of good luck/have fun/good game, etc., and this would be sending one, single message at the start of a game that's actually informative to smooth things over with other players. After all, if they don't want even a single helpful message, couldn't they just get this extension? ;)

One example: I always try to chat with somebody who's running in the red prior to skipping their turn. Frequently, they'll just resume playing without any chat response, which always feels rude and weird; it would help to know that they're not getting chat messages up-front. I imagine an auto-message would also help avoid getting at least some red thumbs, particularly in co-op games.

What about adding an optional automated "muted chat via browser extension" message at the start of games? Then you could just argue about whether the default is on or off :D.

Agreed. A notification like this would let me know I might as well be playing against a bot and I can decide what to do with that information.
