Turn based moves

Post by yodamus »

I would like to start playing games that seem to only be played turn based and not real-time even tho they only take 20-40 minutes. When setting up a turn based game. If I set 8 moves per day. Does that mean only 8 max moves per day. Or can the players finish a game over a 24hr period by taking more moves if both online. Basically if all players are online can it be played like real time without the timer...

Yes, turn based games will play just like real time games if everyone is online and actively playing (minus the timer, like you said).

The "moves per day" just sets how much time each player receives back each time their turn comes up (and how much starting time they get).

Even in 1 turn per 2 days, games can be played in real time, if all players are connected and making moves as soon as it's their turn.

But please be aware that players might very well only take the 8 minimum moves per day. If you can't find anyone willing to play real time, don't expect them to play "real time" in turn based setting.

I've had 1 move/day games that I start and finish in a single evening because my opponent and I were both around and taking our turns.
I've also had 1 move/day games were I go a couple days between turns because a couple of players only log in once a day.

There can be quite a variance in turn based games, the timer is just setting the minimum speed (on average, as people also have their time bank).

Is there a way to calculate this? How much time do you get back? Does it depend on how much you use up in the previous turn or does it always top up the same amount, but not go over a maximum?

For x turns per day, you get 24/x hours back every turn. Except when x > 4, then you have to select a 12-hour window of playing hours, and you get 12/x hours back every turn.

How much time players get added to their time bank depends on the game speed setting.

For normal turn based you divide 24 by the number of moves per day (4 moves per day: 24/4 = 6, so +6 hours after every move). To a maximum of 24h or 3 times the added time, whichever is higher. So for 4 moves per day the maximum should be 18 (+6h x 3 = 18h) but since 18 is lower than 24 the maximum time bank is 24h.

For fast turn based games instead of dividing 24 by the number of moves, you divide 12 by the number of moves and the maximum time bank is 12h.
Fast turn based games have a 12h playing window. Outside this window the clock does not run down.

I hope that helps :D

How is 'fast' defined here?
