Opening strategy in Blooms

Post by Dr C »

I've played several games of Blooms, managed to rank in the top five and enjoy this game a lot, but I still find the strategy behind the opening moves quite puzzling.

In Go one should focus on controlling the sides early on. However, in Blooms, particularly on boards up to size 6, this strategy doesn't seem to apply as effectively. There's also the dilemma of whether it's better to start placing stones connected to others of the same color early on or to spread them out to control a larger area, even if it means sacrificing several of them. Moreover early in the game its not easy to see how one player's two colors cooperate and interfere.

The players with whom I played all used different strategies in the opening, but it's not obvious to find weakenesses nor strong points right away usually.

What are your thoughts on this?

perhaps the ai ai program can provide some clarity if you set the maximum time, 1 hour, computer-computer. but with the increase in the board, this program is rapidly becoming "stupid". someone will certainly make a self-learning engine in the near future. There is a lot of wisdom hidden in this game!
