Got kicked from a tournament because another player skipped someone?

This is the tournament, Gaia Project. I was in the final 7 and playing a game of four. I had the most points at the time in round 4. One player went over time and so another player in the game skipped them and the game ended. However, the tournament chose one person from our four at random to go to the final with the remaining three players. I was one of the ones who was dropped. I didn't lose the game and I didn't skip the player who had gone over time. Any one know why this happened and if there's anything that could be done to fix it? I've been playing this tournament since December last year and came really far, I had a shot at winning the whole thing but got dropped randomly.

This gets discussed regularly (see here: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36981 for another few discussions of it). No, it's not fair. But when a game ends before the true game end, scores are generally no longer a fair measure either. A game that ends due to maximum time reached looks at the remaining time of all players (which also may or may not be fair). There's a suggestion that a game ended due to booting decides based on account age of the non-booted players (which does seem to be true there), or that it's just random. Neither of which are fair either. A game that ends without completion is difficult to judge. And even if someone came up with a perfectly fair in all situations solution, it still requires someone at BGA to implement it, and they don't seem to care about making changes to the tournament framework.

nik covered it pretty well. I found out about this the hard way, too, and from that point on I've never played any tournaments with games with more than 2 players (not that I play a ton of tournaments). That's the only way to guarantee this can't happen to you.

In your table, you are killed because you are the younger registered in BGA.

Maybe you should create a bug for BGA. Bugs already exists requesting that no player be skipped by another player in tournament for time.

I agree! It's basically 2 rules fighting each other and the wrong wins!

First rule is: exact 4 players are on tables, skip any rest
Second rule is: from 4, 3 advance to next round, 1 is elimanted

The logic works in almost all rounds perfectly together. But on the end the First rule got higher prio than the second and therefore this happens. Which is really bad in such kind of tournaments. I also faced this several times (I like the "Lucky Winner" Tournaments")

There are several solutions. 1 straight forward would be to just create round of 4s and continue eleminating just 1 (rest skips in eqaul amounts) until final 4 is reached. I wonder why this isn't happening because it basically following the exact rules.

Note, in that table, I suppose that the killer didn’t know that he will be eliminated doing that kill!!!

Ah so it's because I haven't been a member as long that I was chosen, really is a shame. I'm hesitant to play tournaments now because making it so far and then losing unfairly is very disappointing.

Yeah in that situation there would have been rounds of four players until only four players remained which I am fine with. In this situation it would seem to be logical that the person who exceeded their time and was kicked is the loser for that game and so the other three of us go to the next round, just like what would have happened if the game reached its conclusion and the player with the lower score was eliminated.

Having an explanation helps though so thanks everyone for the responses, I appreciate it! Life goes on...

I suppose, pure supposition, that only the winer of your table will have gone in final.

So it is also bad for player in position 2 and 3...

The same thing just happened to me in a 4-player Lucky Numbers tournament. The rules should be pretty simple. The person who chooses to boot a player in a game that has more than two players, should automatically forfeit their chance to continue in the tournament as soon as they boot someone since they are the impatient (often rude) one.

I, along with the other player, did not have a problem with the person who had run out of time, yet when the Impatient person booted them, they continued and I was booted.

It has happened so many times that I’m about to be done with the platform. It’s supposed to be fun. Why waste my time and get part of the way through a tournament for some jerk to eliminate me on a technicality, when I still had days left on my timer?

The issue would just be eliminated if skipping wasn't allowable in tournament-games. The maximum length a tournament game can ever be is 15 or 30 days, as they're the longest 2 options available when setting it up - just take away the ability to skip players out of time, and let all tournament games run to the maximum length if necessary.
