Why is precise ELO no longer shown on game pages?

Post by JackNapis »

I just noticed that BGA recently stopped showing my precise ELO number on the pages for specific games. Now it just shows my general level (Apprentice, Good Player, etc.) I sometimes use my ELO to decide which tables to join. For example, if I'm close to achieving the next level in a particular game, I might choose to play that one rather than another.

Along similar lines, I'm still annoyed that BGA no longer shows players' ELO for open tables on a player's tables page, and that I have to click through to the game page to actually join the table.

For coop they decided players cared too much, I assume (though Hanabi still seems to have very aggressively antagonistic players). All coop games had visible elo removed.

If it's not a coop game I don't know. Yes I really dislike the new lobby system as well, since I prefer "Play Now", a clean interface, and seeing quick info before joining.

Are you joining games using the Manual setting on the Play Now page? We aren't yet forced to join games the way you described.

It's either because the publisher requested it, the game is solved, or there's easily accessible online engines for it.

Altered is one where the publisher requested it

Let's Catch The Lion is solved (Given perfect play from both players, the first player loses 100% of the time)

Chess has easily accessible engines

These three things can all lead to precise elo being removed, but the latter two don't always guarantee that.

What I want to do is to look at a friend's Games in progress page, scan through the ones that are waiting for players, find one I like, and click a button to join the game. That's the way it used to work, before BGA redesigned the Games in progress page. Now, I have to click the title of the game, which takes me to the game page (and away from the Games in progress page, unless I right click and open in a new tab), and then click a button to join my friend's table. It's extra steps that serve no purpose.

You're right, I see that some games do still show my precise ELO on the game page. One I was looking at that doesn't is Letter Tycoon, which makes sense because players can use word finders. Now that I know what's going on, I don't mind so much that it's not displayed for tjose games. :)

Ouch. I never joined games that way, but I can see how the extra steps would be annoying.
