Many of the easy discovery have already been found.
It's now very difficult to come with a new situation which is enough commun to be seen multiples times in 1000 games, and find interesting ways to resolve it.

I think the most recent situation (which is still some years ago) I read which make me baffled is one derivate of the shadow finesse (which got deleted in hgroup because hard complexity extremely rare and is never done in bga):
B: x-b1-x-x
C: x-r2-x-x
D: r1-x-x-x
On the above situation, if A decides to clue r1, it's assumed that A will clue red to C to get r1+r2.
But now A clue red to D. On B's pov, that clue make no sense since A in purpose decide to not clue a finesse and remove possibilities of bluffs.
So from that situation, B needs to do more than playing one card to make that clue better. It seem fine to assume that B will plays the position of r2 (in number of finesse positions) which is slot 2 to indicate it to C. So that clue instead of getting 2 cards (r1+r2) is getting 3 (b1+r1+r2).
And that's call a shadow finesse. I let you imagine self shadow finesse, and adding a lie (bluff) to it [my mp are open for that].

And Hanabi have the problem of nearly all games, the decrease of popularity over time. And on Hanabi that's even worst since the skill needed to goes in veteran tables increase over time, while the tables of beginner is still pretty low.

If I compare it to chess, I still believe that the ratio complexity of rules/skill cap is higher on Hanabi than on Chess but it's because of:
- it's a multiplayer game, which forces to have more than 2 players to have a great increase of complexity (since 4/5 players game is way harder to play perfectly than 2 players)
- the initial rules ( 'conventions' ) the players will do can be completely changed and have each their own branchs
- some branchs have absolutely no common sense and seem boring to play
- creating a new branch ask you to have others players playing regularly with you and arrive commonly to advance in those conventions

While in chess, if you wanna discuss about a situation, you just show the situation, and everyone is on the same page.
In Hanabi if you do that, you either are limited to hgroup, to bga, to a few developed set a convention, and/or to a set played per very few people. And so that makes everyone play the first two, which develop even further those, until that start to be very hard to find something new.

I still think Hanabi is a masterpiece which got it's time which was way longer than a very high number of games.
