Question about Moves per Day setting

Post by CrumpledFish »

I noticed that several of the games I started recently that used the "2 moves per day" setting are showing as "1 move per day" once the game starts. I've been away from BGA for a while so I suspect this is just something I don't understand versus a bug so I'm hoping someone can explain why this is happening. Thanks!

Are you setting up your games with the old lobby ("play now"), or on the game page? Is your game speed option locked or flexible? (There's a slider with crossed arrows to the right of the game speed: when locked it's left & grey, when flexible it's right and the arrows & background are turquoise.)

There are a couple of similar questions & two possibly related bugs:

https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=76865
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=115332 (discussed at https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=170825)

My impression is that trying to match people to existing tables is not always honoring all requirement, and that (sometimes) someone trying to open a new table is placed into an existing table (which may only partially match their request). These may be incorrect interpretations on my part, but may be worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks for the info and the links. I did try and find similar topics before posting, but I couldn't figure out how to word what I was looking for to narrow the search down enough to be useful. Appreciate your help!

Thanks for trying. So much clutter would be avoided if people did this.

Are you still having this problem? It's been happening to me since July. I created a bug report here: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=129086

It's been happening to me as well. I even went back to double check that I had the slider in the right place and flexibility was turned off. I now have two tables that are going to take twice as long as I was wanting which is frustrating.

It seems like there's some sort of bug where sometimes I end up in games at a frequency that is higher than I have requested. I normally set games to 1 or 2 moves a day, and I don't have it set to be flexible. But occasionally I end up running out of time on turns unexpectedly because the game setting doesn't seem to match what I set it to.

Today I got kicked from a game due to running out of time. I discovered afterwards that the game had apparently been set to 3 moves a day (8 hours a turn). I never choose this setting because I sleep (crazy I know!). Even within that setting, I feel like something weird happened with the turns, because when I went to bed at 11:30pm, I was caught up on all my games, but when I woke up and checked my games at 9am, it said I was late for a turn that was due at 5am. I played it and switched to getting work done, and when I checked my email at 4pm I saw that I was late for a move since 1pm. When I went to play it I found I had been kicked from the game. At 8 hours a turn this seems weird, I don't know how I could have been late at 5am already, although I suspect the timeout at 1pm was due to negative time from the previous move.

At least I've finally figured out how to locate the information once I'm in a game on the turn setting, but I still don't understand why sometimes I get stuck in games that don't match.

In addition, while I was writing this post the first time, after I was almost done it decided to pop up some page telling me my game was closed on me (which I'd already found out at that point) and I lost my entire post. Redirecting users to another page while they're in the middle of posting on the forums is a particularly bad implementation.

If it's this one https://boardgamearena.com/gamereview?table=563724793, the time plot at the bottom shows you were out of time already after one day. But the interesting part is that your time never goes up, it's always decreasing. That could be because you always took more that 8 hours for your turn, or because the game has some turns that don't give extra time, or because of a bug. From the times in the log, I think it's the first. So, if you end a turn with negative time, for your next turn 8 hours are added, but since you started negative, you have less than 8 hours until it reaches 0. If you take more than 8 hours, you'll end even more in the negative, and so on.

Thank you for showing me the details. This explains it a lot better. It still doesn't explain how I ended up in a 3 move per day game, which I definitely would not have done deliberately, but I see why I kept running out of time in that game- the other player always played their move about an hour after I go to bed, which means I pretty much always had the maximum time between moves before I even woke up, so even if I woke up and played a turn right away, I'd be at a deficit, and then they apparently were playing shortly after, which didn't give me much time between turns unless I play during work. Since my games normally have 12-24 hours available per turn I usually don't try to play during work hours unless I'm notified that I'm behind on a turn, so I didn't realize it had gotten that out of whack (and if things are busy at work I don't always check my email). It's usually less of a problem because my playtimes align better with other players, but this apparently was an extreme case.

I will try to watch for this in the future and check at lunchtime to see if any games are behind, just in case I get stuck in this situation again where the turn frequency is higher than expected (I did message the person to try to let them know about the issue, but I don't know if they saw it).

Do you have any idea how to prevent it giving me games higher than 1 move a day? Typically I start the games myself, or check the timing on them so I don't know why this has happened a few times now. I don't want people to have to wait excessively for me, which is why I generally pick slow games, since it's only in the evenings I have time to play much.

Only by joining tables manually, and maybe using the "old lobby" ("PLAY NOW" link). And double-checking the speed settings before joining/opening a table.
