Feature request

Post by Juampi1998 »

Don't really know if this is the place to do this, in case this is the place there it goes:

I would like for hanabi to support a new rules variant. In particular the variant "Timed display" in this rules https://www.qugs.org/rules/r98778.pdf

Interesting, I have never heard of this variant before.
It looks super easy to me, as you actually know exactly about 70% of the cards you play.

Agreed. This looks more like 'free clues' variant.
Note the declaration is not obliged: players can skip it if they don't know what the card is.

In addition to the occasional extra indirect clue: by claiming a particular color I may be giving info about what colors I see.

Seems to be a nice variant to make learning the game more forgiving. Say you're still clueing most cards fully before daring to play it. Whereas normally, you'd barely have any turns left to play half the deck. This variant would not just allow a chance to actually finish. You're regularly using two clues for 1 play hint, and getting 1 token back. It'd likely even maintain a fairly "normal" balance of clue economy overall.

Don't think there's any appeal for experienced players. Might help new players get into the game though.

You can make a request on the bug/request page and wait to see if enough players vote for this feature.

I'm curious as to what the goal of the variant is.

From a teaching perspective, I agree that calling out the card you are going to play, could be useful.
But, you can already do that by calling it out in the chat (without getting a free token).

If you just want to make the game easier, it would be very easy to start the game with 10 tokens instead of 8, for example.

As a developer, this full variant would require quite a lot of code changes because it introduces more actions from the players (choosing color + number).
It would be much much easier to just add a new easy mode with 10 tokens instead.

As with all the things we can change, we have to ask ourselves how useful it is (and for how many people) and how much time it will take to implement (and maintain).

I always thought the regular game should have 1 additional rule. Besides the 3 options (play/clue/discard) there should be a 4th option: play a card blindly from the deck to the piles. Not just after the deck has run out, but anytime you choose.

I know this is a different subject, but this variant made me think of this idea again.

I think it is only useful for the last turn, when you don't have time to draw the last or the penultimate card to be able to play it.
Another more interesting way to avoid the hardest deck, IMO, would be to know from the beginning, the three last cards of the deck.

Too much info. Could be fun if the last 3 cards are known secretly, one each, by 3 different players (and possibly without knowing which of the last 3 it is, or even which players know about them). :D

Don't forget you need an approval from the publisher (or the designer if appropriate) to implement house rules of licensed games on BGA.
