Is it possible to disable the game chat?

Post by twiddly2 »

Specifically for Catan?
I hope to play more games in the future but a Disable Chat feature is useful for ALL games.
Is there a special fee we can pay to BGA for a Mute or "Do Not Disturb" feature so I never see what other players have typed?
I don't want to hear complaints about how I play anymore and I can't possibly be the only one.

https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30978 is a thread, though I have never tried that.

Thanks for pointing me to it. I rarely play on my laptop but it's an attractive notion!

I am no longer able to tolerate intimidation in chat.

If people are trying to intimidate you or criticising your play style in the chat, report them. That's not allowed.

I haven't played many games yet, but the few times I have seen chat used, it was mostly a negative experience:
- A 5p Carcassone game where someone told me to block another person.
- A 3p TFM game where someone was confused why I didn't attack the other player because they attacked me (I was going after the leader).

The other times chat is used is for stuff like "GG" / "Thanks for the game", but these are just useless kind of. And they kind of create an expectation / standard to be held to, like when someone says gg you feel the need to respond in kind, to be polite. I'm just here to play games thank you.

So you just want everyone to act as if they are bots just here for you to play against at your convenience? It's OK if you want to treat human beings that way, but that's what it sounds like.

I'd say that's the apt way to treat randoms on the internet. Specially when most of them would use chat to just be toxic anyway. I don't think many people use BGA for the same social experience that irl board gaming provides.

I'm guessing certain keywords trigger a moderator's review and other things have to actually be reported. A keyword filter is a blunt instrument that don't understand context. Now the *moderator* is supposed to inject context into the equation, but that failed in this instance.
