New Arena Season - Points??

From what I can tell, as a newbie to Arena mode, a new season started today... Yet people have like 1700 points. How is that possible? As mentioned, I'm a newbie, so apologies in advance. Can someone explain it to me please?
I looked at the forum explaining Arena mode and it says you get 3pts for a win. How can people have over a thousand points when the season is a day old? Thanks in advance.

That sounds like people already in Elite, where the points system switches to an ELO-like system, where everyone starts at 1500. 1700 may be reachable with 6 or 7 wins, doable in 24 hours.

As richyfourtytwo, once you reach elite Arena displays an Arena-specific ELO. You actually have one too and it's around 1500, depending on whether you've already played a lot in the new season. It is going up and down as well even while you're in bronze, silver, etc., but it remains hidden until you reach elite.

The 3 or 4 "points" or medals or shields or whatever you get while you're bronze, silver, etc., are a different thing just used until you're promoted into elite.
