When does drawing 3 cards apply for killing outlaw

I played a game as sheriff and it was down to 2 outlaws and renegade. Near the end of the game an outlaw with 1 hit point left challenged me to a duel. I discarded bang but the outlaw did not and died. Should I have been rewarded 3 cards for killing that outlaw. I did not gain cards for defeating that outlaw.
