Reward for neighbor with X

Can someone explain what is considered a "neighbor"? I never seem to get the reward I was expecting when I play a card with a neighbor reward. Or is this a bug?

It's one of the players sitting on either side of you - just count up all the icons in their tableau.

All of those cards work correctly as far as I've seen.

thank you for the explanation - I thought it meant a neighboring card to the card I just placed rather than a neighboring player!

Yep! It's interesting that they don't have any cards that care about neighboring cards, which is a go-to mechanic in these kinds of games. I think it really works great. Weirdly, the dead-center card is the least valuable spot
