Symbols on the Island spaces

We're in the middle of our first game, 2 player, and confused by a particular symbol on the island maps.
On some of the island spaces that give money or victory points, there are additional small numbers (3 or 4) next to what seems to be a downward arrow. I'd guess that this is something relating to number of players, but I can't see anything about it in the rules. Can someone clarify?

It is not a downward arrow but a person and indeed relates to player count.

It is mentioned in the setup section of the rules:
Shuffle the 16 Specimen tokens and randomly place them face up on each large, round location with a flag found on the Island and Ocean tracks
near the bottom of the board. Some of these locations show an icon indicating specific player counts. Do not place a Specimen token on locations marked for more players than are currently playing.
