Players abusing expelling if you are winning.

Post by Belle End »

If a player is not clearly AFK expelling only happens if you are winning. As it is now it is too easy to abuse and too punishing.

In a tableau game like Wingspan or Earth, when you are winning, more often than not you have a lot of actions to do. When you snowball early you have a lot more actions throughout the game, thus needing more time.

In a 2 player arena game the time limit is more or less redundant for game speed anyway, the only use of it is to express your annoyance at someone when you are losing.
Instead, give the option for a forfeit in 45-60 seconds without losing reputation when you run out of time at least. Which incentivizes you to play quicker and better without punishing you too much. If someone is actually ruining the game or being AFK there are ways to report that already, giving reputation a value rather than not knowing if it means someone is slow or an actual * to people. You can also already spot a slow player by looking at their profile. If you look at mine you can tell, but it says I left two games. Games I would have won and games I would have stayed to the end even if it meant losing as to not ruin the sport or the fun for others. Games that were ruined for me.

I am behaving almost exemplary but I am being punished for taking 30 seconds too long to press some buttons. As I said this severely reduces the value of glancing at someone's reputation at all and joining a lobby might get me instantly booted because they think that I am behaving badly or something. I recently discovered this site which I am very glad I did. But oversite like this only creates an abusive community and makes me wonder if I am really going to continue my subscription if this is how people are going to be allowed to behave.

I hope I gave you a few ideas.
Thanks.

1) In the two games from which you were expelled, they were real time games set to normal (+0:59 per turn (maximum 3:57)) and fast (+0:37 per turn (maximum 2:51)) settings. If those are too fast for you to not run out of time, only play slow (+1:34 per turn (maximum 5:42)). If that is still too fast, only play turn-based or only play with people you know who won't kick you.

2) One thing you agree to when you click "accept" is the clock setting. Sticking to that time is respecting the other players' time, because they may have limited time to play and have a right to expect that the people they are playing with will stick to the limits. I wouldn't kick you if I could see that you were playing, but as you now know other people will.

For example, I don't know Ark Nova very well, and I read about even experienced players running out of time in real-time games on the forums. I am sure that I would take too much time because I'm unfamiliar with the cards and would have to read each one. So out of respect for my opponent, the first game of Ark Nova I played on here I played turn-based.

Added to that, the expel system is already very forgiving. The first time someone tries to expel you because you've already gone over on your time, you have a good amount of time to still end your turn and you won't get kicked out. I think it's 30 seconds the first time. The next time is less -- 20 seconds or so.

It's a very forgiving system, allowing you to go over on your committed turn time multiple times in a game before you can finally be kicked out. That's on top of being able to bank some excess turn time from one turn to the next, allowing you to have the occasional long turn without going over.

While I agree with the problem "games with lots of actions can cause timeouts just because of having to push lots of buttons" I disagree with the conclusion "therefore expelling should be harder". Instead, the focus should be on how the increment can be adapted, such as giving a boost per specific action instead of turn, etc. There is no problem with players expelling those out of time, the problem lies with why those players are timing out in the first place.
