What is "automatic mode"?

Post by slimy_asparagus »

Just to be clear I don't want to use it. I have seen references to it, for example in the FAQ. I am just puzzled that a complete newby managed to accept one of my games without apparently having logged on for 4 days. However I cannot find anything in the user interface that looks like it might be "automatic mode".

There is an "automatic" matching mode for real-time games, but that has nothing to do with accepting the game automatically. You still have to confirm you want to play a game even if it was matched automatically.

Games that are accepted automatically once you have queued for them are 1) turn-based games and 2) arena games. Make sure you actually dequeue from those games instead of simply closing your browser window if you no longer want to wait for that table.

So may be I can't find it because I don't play real-time.

However, how can a player join my correspondence game without being logged on?

You mean without you being logged on? The whole point of a correspondence/turn-based/asynchronous game is that it can proceed without all of the players being simultaneously logged on. The queue for turn-based games is asynchronous as well. It would frankly be pretty silly if a turn-based game could only start while all the players are logged on. Often when I create a turn-based game it may not fill until the next day. But at any rate you should have received some kind of notification, either on your mobile device or by email, both when the game had begun and when it was your turn.

There may be differences in opinion about whether everyone should have to accept the start (the way you do for real-time games). I'm fine with the way it works now.

No I started a correspondence game yesterday. The person who accepted it had not been logged on for 4 days.

I think I get it now. Like I said above, they didn't have to "accept" it by manually clicking on a button like you have to for a real-time game. It appears that the other player had merely joined a queue for that game, and when you created one that satisfied whatever criteria they wanted it matched you two. In a sense they had "pre-accepted" joining any game that matched their criteria. That's how it works for correspondence games. I think there's a limit to how long it will keep someone in a queue, but apparently that limit is more than four days.
