Luck and Strategy both as 2

Post by GiannisIsTheBeast »

Find it kind of interesting that both luck and strategy are listed relatively low at 2. Isn’t it usually one or the other? If you aren’t relying on luck or strategy to win, what exactly determines the winner? Luck and strategy seem to be inversely correlated. I could maybe see both luck and strategy being 3 but I’d lean more towards strategy 4 and luck 2. The top players so far have 70-80% win rates so it seems more strategy than some (like people on BGG) give it credit for. I mostly have played this only at 2 players so higher player counts might have different values for strategy and luck.

Not sure how accurate or how much thought are put into those numbers for luck and strategy but I look at them for new games I play. Perhaps it’s just set and forgot forever… I play Patchwork a lot too and it has strategy and luck of 3 and the top players are at a 90% win rate so that seems bad as well.

I agree that strategy should be higher. At first there seems little to the game, but knowing when to pass and when to play brings much more skill to the game. Just observe
how little you will win initially playing against experienced players. The game has hidden depths.

Very valid points. We've changed the Strategy rating to 3.

I would say it has quite a lot of strategy, and relatively little luck. You may start with lousy cards, but the point is that as you start shedding them your opponent must pick some of them up, which gives you information about their hand and provides opportunities for weakening it. And deciding when to pass even though you have a play is tricky.

I believe the strategy is in the 2P games. When you play with more players it becomes more and more luck. Msybe in 3P its 50-50 but with 4 and higher: luck wins over strategy. That means: its the best 2P trickgame I know at the moment without a third botplayer (like Crew)

Yeah kind of funny how many people on BGG aren’t actually understanding its value as a 2 player game. Should have more ratings of “best” at 2 players.

I really wish they wouldn’t have named this game Odin. Whenever I do searches for it, I only get “A feast for Odin” results. Would be cool to see this game take off more since I think it’s great but I think it was a marketing miss to call it Odin.
