To many players progressing

Post by GrandAt »

Hi!

In this tournament: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=289164 the settings have made it such that to many players progress to the next step. The next step in the tournament should be for 16 players, but 17 will progress. I guess this is due to one or more players leaving the tournament and the setting of 4 players per match with a minimum of 4 players per match, so player 17 is skipped and remains in the tournament.

Do anyone know how the system handles this when it comes to the final? 4 players in the final and a 5th that is skipped? What will be the rankings if so?

Short answer, no.

Long answer:
The original tournament framework was built for two-player games. Period.

Everything else beyond that was implemented with pressure from players who always demand more more more (like how people cry about not having all the expansions 30 seconds after a game is released on here). Tourneys with 3+ players per game are held together by duct tape and frequently break or have annoying consequences from having more than two players, such as how the advancing player(s) is determined if someone gets expelled.

So anyone participating in such tourneys is involved in an unmanaged years-long beta test where the only documentation is found in this forum.

When you tell us what happens, then we'll have a data point to reference the next time it happens to someone else.

Ok, thanks for the answer. After seeing this in the tournament i linked to i suddently realize why many multiplayer tournaments have the settings, for exampel 4 players per match and 3 players minimum. That way odd numbers are corrected and should at least solve some of the issues with players dropping.

The final table of the tournament is on now ( https://boardgamearena.com/table?table= ... 38&nr=true ) and as you suggested, it has four players with one other player skipped. Looking at the standings ( https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?i ... ge_display ) it seems that of the five players still alive at the end of Step 7, two had already received a bye in a previous step. I wonder whether AmericanCoot was chosen at random from the remaining three, or was there some specific reason the algorithm chose AmericanCoot. Also, what happens at the end of Step 8; I can think of four plausible possibilities:

(a) The tournament ends with AmericanCoot ranked 5th (behind the four players still playing).

(b) The tournament ends with AmericanCoot ranked 1st (ahead of the four players still playing).

(c) The tournament ends with AmericanCoot in a tie for 3rd (behind the two players who finish first and second, and tied with the player finishing third).

(d) The tournament does not end but proceeds to Step 9, with AmericanCoot and the three top finishers of Step 8.

Well, alternative d would be interesting! :)

I missed the alternative there AmericanCoot ties for 1st place. But maybe there's a reason why you don't think that wouldn't happen.

The one being skipped seems to be random, but would be interesting to know for sure.

So the tournament framework is flexible enough to increase the number of players who advance if they are needed to have a full table for the final round, even if it exceeds the number of players advancing from each table in all previous rounds.

Yes, it is pretty interesting, that in this special circumstance, it has the top three finishers advance to the next "step" even though the tournament conditions prescribe that only two players advance. It's probably the best way.

This is a great tournament to look at for an example of how 3+ eliminations work, thanks for sharing.

One setting that affected the Stage 8, 3 players advancing is that the preferred number of players AND minimum players was 4. I think this is why it chose 3 to advance, because number counts are higher up in the hierarchy than number of qualified players.

If the minimum number of players was 3 I would expect only 2/4 to advance and then have 3 people in the finals.
