AGE OF INNOVATION: A Terra Mystica game

Post by DrClick »

Age of Innovation is a standalone game set in the world of Terra Mystica.

Twelve factions, each with unique characteristics, populate this world of varying terrains. Here you will compete to erect buildings and merge them into cities. Each game allows you to create new combinations of factions, homelands, and abilities so that each game isn't the same as another.

You control one of these factions and will terraform the game map's terrain into your homelands where you can erect your buildings. Proximity to other factions may limit your expansion, but it also gains you significant advantages in the game. This tension adds to the appeal of the Terra Mystica series.

Upgrade your buildings to gain valuable resources such as tools, scholars, money, and power. Build schools to advance in different sciences and collect books, which you can use to make innovations. Build your palace to gain a powerful new ability or build workshops, guilds, and universities to complete your culture.

Success in this game requires balancing focus on both short-term and long-term goals while making the most of available bonuses. Understanding the interconnected systems is crucial, and each playthrough sharpens your strategy and approach to achieving your objectives. Despite its complexity, the game design never feels overwhelming or overly complicated.
On your turn, you perform a single action, usually involving paying for something and receiving the corresponding benefit. Occasionally, you'll stumble upon satisfying combos, but this isn't a "combo-centric" game, making such moments simple and straightforward to handle.

You don't know Terra Mystica? That's fine! The game has its very own tutorial available, and you can find more information by clicking the link below:

We would love to send some love to the Feuerland Spiele team, as well as to Helge Ostertag - the game designer - who allowed this game to reach your lovely board game platform!
Also, most of the kudos must be sent to Rincevent123 who coded and developed this entire game for BGA. It's such a big game, he deserves our bravos!

And that's it for your Wednesday Release Time!
What's coming around the corner?
Be there next week to discover it.
Until then, as always:
Take care and play fair!

This game is loads of fun. I ashamed to admit I've been playing it way more than TM lately.

As an original TM fan, I'm not so impressed by the game. The implementation is quite good, the only thing I would change is a zoom effect when you hover over the faction board (e.g. the costs for the improvements of navigation or terraforming are very small on my screen).
The game itself... the idea is excellent, to broaden the strategic frame adding variability. This prevents the "scripted" feeling you have when in some setups there is not much room to vary the strategy, at least for some factions. However, for my taste it is way too much combo-centric.
Only a handful of games played, but I've already seen players doing a single thing all over through the game (e.g. tunneling for the Moles or flying carpeting) because with a given faction/palace tile this becomes a very efficient way of scoring. While it is interesting that you don't have to necessarily play it in a Terra Mystica fashion, with aggressive expansion in mind, the fact that you can completely forget about one of the main ingredients of the game just to exploit a certain combo is detrimental to the overall experience. Of course this is my very personal opinion, and I'm glad that I had the chance to try the game on BGA before going FtF.
