time limit to configure a table

Post by mattnaik »

Why does this even exist? Why do I have 30 seconds to set the settings of my table before it's created? Why can't you just add a button to create the table when I'm done setting all the settings. Maybe I'm not understanding how it works but I don't see any purpose to this functionality.

Well, there is always the "do it now" link right beside the timer..... :)

As to why a timer -- Some server resources are consumed when a table is created, and when one is opened for joining. By forcing all tables to be created to eventually be opened for joining, cleanup routines can be made only for joinable tables. Additionally, during peak times, popular games will have someone join a table virtually the instant it is open for joining. By not having it joinable immediately, the administrator does have some time to make their settings before anyone joins.

I can't imagine what server resources are consumed having the table config screen open before the actual table is created. It's displaying a list of options. Nothing needs to be saved server-side at that point its all client interaction. Once the room is created, then server resources are used.

I just don't like being rushed to make decisions. It's a very unfriendly user experience

Hi,

Well, in fact at first on BGA a table just created was immediately visible in the lobby for everyone.

Some players felt a little intimidated that the table was visible before they had time to set some things up (say for example add a 'First game, can someone teach me this game?' table description). So this 30 seconds delay was added specifically to improve the user experience ;)

Also, there is no reason to feel rushed to make decisions, since you can take as long as you want before choosing an option. It's just that after 30 seconds the table is visible in the lobby, but options are not frozen so you can still change them if you want.

Cheers,
Een

By the way, this is not entirely true of turn-based games. Once the table is visible, one cannot change parameters in the "restrict table access" area. Reputation, time management, and skill levels are locked, with an error message "Unexpected error: You cannot change access right with this table status" in a red banner.

ELO on/off, variants, and number of players are still adjustable, though.

Yes this was the source of my frustration. I sometimes forget to set these and then end up having to delete my table and recreate it hoping I remember all the settings before my 30 seconds is up. It's just a terrible user experience in my opinion and I see no benefit to it. It would be like having 30 seconds to reply to this message.

This is a bug that wasn't reported by anyone until now (couldn't find it in the bug reporting system). It's going to be fixed in the next website release (2-3 days).

About the 30 seconds delay: this delay has no relationship to performance. This delay is only here to make sure that the table will be open 30 seconds after creation. The alternative would be to remove this 30 seconds delay and to add a simple button "open this table now". I have no strong opinion about this: we can make a poll.

Either a manual "open table" button, or a little longer to set parameters (say, 60 seconds) would be fine with me.

Hm, I didn't report that bug? I guess I must have thought it was a feature when turn-based games came out.

Brand new user here... I 100% expected there to be a Pause button. Sounds like a poll would be the way to go. It would be interesting to see how your users actually feel about this.
