How do Master Assassin, Expert Assassin badges actually work?

So I assumed these badges were as simple as you beat players of that rank you get them, but something that I noticed is so Master Assassin for Heat has no-one with the badge as seen here:

3 players beat me while holding Master Rank, so why were they not credited with it? The only thing I can think of is that because this game was turn based, and it goes off rank at the start of the game (when I was below 700 ELO), rather than the end, but that would seem a bit odd when everything else seems based off your ELO at the end of the game.

At the end you fell below 700. 693. My guess would be that it's calculated based on the figure after the game.

Alternative reason - the badge exists, but maybe a glitch for certain games may exist for unknown reasons. BGA is a complicated beast.

I've earned a couple of these badges, and yes, it seems to be awarded as soon as you complete the game beating someone with an appropriate ELO. I'd assume it's based on ELO when you begin the game though, and RazorOz does mention they were below 700 when the game started.

Is the badge awarded in multiplayer games? It may require that (1) you finish 1st, (2) all your opponents are at master level, and (3) you are not a master yourself.

The glitch is that it is awarded based on ending ELO, which is indeed meh since a losing master or expert may very well lose their status in the game. This is definitively something we have to work on.

When I beat experts/masters I get the badge even if they lose rating that causes them to fall out of the title. I play real-time games though. I can't speak for if they differ in turn-based.

Definitely awarded in multiplayer games, see the Expert Assassin award here for Heat, https://boardgamearena.com/award?game=1873&award=144, there are only about 20 "Experts", no way all these players won games with only Experts in them.

In fact, opening that up has only muddied the waters further, as I recognise many of the players there. Take the most recent player to get the award, Wazzaa21, he was awarded it today for this game: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=594715001. A turn-based 5 player tournament game with 1 expert in it. But let's then scour his results just recently alone:

Even the theory about having to start the game as an Expert for it to count doesn't make sense, as look at this game over 3 months ago https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=554987960. They beat me here, there's no way I didn't start that game > 500 ELO, yet again no award.

It makes no sense, this badge seems to just be given out randomly after you beat someone of the rank with no consistency, but there's got to be more to it than that.

It's not even consistent with this though, as shown in my previous post. From knowing Wazzaa21, I knew they'd beat players > 500 ELO long before today, they should have received Expert Assassin dozens of times before today, and that's in games where the players were still more than 500 ELO at the end, so whatever the glitch is seems much bigger than just this.

Still doesn't add up though, as the last two of the games I posted from Wazzaa had him placing 1st and beating an Expert player and he wasn't awarded Expert Assassin for those games.
