Hex numbering

Post by Cnythia »

In a recent game, a friend and I could not figure out how hexes are numbered. He was on phone, I was on computer; neither one of us could figure out where the counting starts from. Could someone explain?

Each territory is given two coordinates. The first number refers to columns, and the second to rows. The former is more complicated, so lets begin with the latter.

The rows are numbered 0 to 9, top to bottom. Albion and Nordic's home bases are in the 0 row, and Crimea's home base and village are in the 9 row.

The columns are numbered 0 to 14, left to right. Polania and Saxony's home bases (and the forest encounter) are in the 0 column, and Rusviet and Togawa's home bases are in the 14 columns.

It might not be immediately clear how these columns work, as you might expect that two territories that are adjacent left-to-right would be considered 1 column distance apart. This is incorrect, however, as the game needs to account for the territories that are vertically "in between" such territories. For example, Albion's mountain and Polania's forest are in the same vertical column, and you might think that Albion's farm is just one column over. But since Albion's tundra is vertically "between" them, the mountain and farm are actually two columns apart.

By using this understanding, you should be able to figure out the log entries. And as a challenge, check to see which coordinates should be given for the factory. Let me know what you get.

NOTE: According to the rules, home bases are not considered territories. I have not followed this precisely here in order to make the explanation more straightforward.

I meant to say thank you. I think your explanation of how the columns are numbered / staggered resolves the confusion.
