Question about Quantum

Post by Tragic »

In Quantum, shouldn't you be able to use the "2" ship as a free action with out moving it?

Image

• I am trying to construct a cube on a 8 planet.
• I already have the 5 there.
• I have the power "Ingenious" in play (Allows construction from diagonals as well as orthogonal planet docks)

Now.... shouldn't I be able to:

Action 1) - Move the "3" next to the "2"
Free Action "2") - Use the "2" ability to pick up the three and deposit it into the top right diagonal slot of the planet
Action 2+3) - Construct the Cube

That should be total legal right?

But as far as I can tell the site is forcing me to actually "move" the "2". It will not let me just pick up and put down as a free action. It is requiring me to pick up the three and then move the 2 before I can drop it off.

That is not correct right?

Hi. The rules for the game state for your 2-ship's special ability:
Place one of your ships that is in any surrounding space on top of the flagship. Then use the flagship’s move action to move the flagship 1 or 2 spaces. Finally, place the transported ship in any empty surrounding space. A flagship cannot attack if it transports, but a transported ship CAN move and attack normally after it is dropped off.
So the 2-ship special ability requires a move action, much like the 5-ship. You ARE allowed to move out and back to the same space such that your 2-ship doesn't move while transporting but this correctly costs you a movement action.

The "2" Flagship's ability is "carry as you move." It picks up a ship, moves 1 or 2 spaces, then puts the transported ship in an empty surrounding space. That's a paraphrase, but it's right in the rules.

Other ships' special abilities work differently. The "1" Battleship rules are that it can move/attack normally, then use Strike for a second attack on the same turn. The "3" Destroyer specifically says the Warp does not count as the destroyer's move. And so on.

Right... so the "ship action" for the Transport (2pip ship) requires a additional move action. So using the "2" will always use a move action, even if you choose not to move the ship. This also means you are unable to use the "2" ship special action unless you have a full standard action in reserve for the "move".

Seams like I have been playing this wrong the entire time (I have had the physical game from release).

I always played that the "2" transport action wasa free action separate to the move action. So you could on Action 1 use the "2" to move a cube 3 diagonal spaces. x -> 2 -> x and still have 3 standard actions left.

Interesting.. this really effects what I have always considered to be one of the most powerful ships in the game. Still very strong but not remotely as strong.

I think the 2-ship is still the most valuable and versatile ship in the game, though. With the ability to transport without using an action, it would have gotten downright ridiculous. :-D

Without a 2, you can't construct a cube on your first turn. 2 ships are very strong at attacking. And, the transport action can effectively carry another ship (such as a 1-ship) up to 6 total spaces, so it greatly increases your maneuverability.

yeah I agree the #2 is defiantly a extremely strong ship. Not very useful for construction though!
