Attitude de jeu

Post by EL_COMMANDENTE »

Hello

Welcome,

Unlike the DoW platform a match consists of playing both sides (Allies & Axis) of the battle.

Conceding is used by some players when a match is unwinnable - that's how I use it in the return battle.

Some players are slow to play, others may have problems with their internet connections - sometimes I do.

You can enforce the time limit and the other player will be ejected from the game.
I usually give my opponent some extra time - but if they are playing very slowly and timing out then they deserve their penalty.

Salut Laurent,

Yes conceding is very very rare IRL in Memoir'44. Most of us play for enjoyment of the game.
On BGA theet are players who think differently, they would rather use their time to start a new game than use that time finishing an old one where they are sure they have lost.

Yes there are slow players here as on the old platform. Here though there is a clock running and if your opponent runs out of time you can kick them (and claim victory). As I am mostly not sure what they are playing slow I have not et kicked players (unless they asked for it themselves) but it is entirely within the rules of BGA.

I do not know which ethics you had on the old perform that you do or don't see here.

Some of BGA needs getting used to for a bit but it still services our Memoir'44 community and keeps it going :)

PS: to concede (should you ever want to) in game you go to the "hamburger menu" in the top right corner. Here you can concede: give victory to your opponent, acceptable following the rules of the BGA platform. Which is different from "quit this game" (in the same menu) which gives you penalties on the platform. That is mostly used if more important stuff arrises in real life that prevents you from playing on.

As a player who regularly concedes in Arena games, why do you consider it pitiful?

Once a player has enough medals that the other player cannot win the full match anymore, then there is no point in playing anymore. The outcome of the game is not going to change. The ELO gains/losses are not going to change.

Why should we then both spend time on something that has no point anymore?

Because I play for the game, to enjoy the playing time. Not for the ELO, or some void and vain digital fame. I guess it has to do with my own approach of the game concept. Is there ever any point in playing? I try not to deprive my opponent from the fun of Victory, even if BGA’s dices and cards draw sometimes makes it hard to cope with.

Conceding makes absolutely no difference to ELO or the outcome of competitions, which are determined by the result not the move that led to that result.
It is normal etiquette in all games to concede when victory is impossible, or when it would require the active collusion of an opponent. There is no 'fun' for a player in playing out 4 or 5 moves of a forced checkmate sequence, which is why their opponent concedes. The same applies in M44 - there are positions in which victory for one side is guaranteed. It is normal etiquette to concede those positions. Sometimes people play on in those positions because they are not yet strong enough to see that the position is lost, or they don't quite understand why it is lost (which is perfectly fine, learning is good) - sometimes people concede before reaching that position because they evaluate the board position incorrectly (which is also fine, mistakes are perfectly acceptable in a game).
There is nothing wrong with not being able to clearly see that position but it is not appropriate to try and present that lack of skill as some kind of ethical superiority. Complaints about conceding come up often on BGA from players who have poor game etiquette due to a lack of experience and you will find you will receive push back if you try to frame good behaviour by your opponent as doing something wrong.

I would suggest you use the "Play" option then, then you will find opponents who play for fun. The people who participate in the Arena mode are trying to get higher in the ranking.

For me personally I do play Memoir’44 for fun, but trying to best you all in the Arena also is a part of that fun 🤩

See you on the battlefields!
