Is quick expulsion possible?

Post by panoptiko »

I was just kicked out in my last turn of a game I was winning with a delay of 12 seconds. Putting the bad sportsmanship aside, don’t you have 20 seconds before expulsion?

Thanks.

Not sure about the rule exactly, but the other player is just a complete loser... Not sure why people actually want to win (Not lose) that way...

I just got kicked from a turn-based Ark Nova game that I was comfortably leading by 20-30 points. Sure, I was a few hours late, but its X-mas, and besides that, it's a very cheap move anyways. I never kick anyone, unless they are >24 hours late and don't respond to a message.

In my eyes, anyone that kicks another player due to being late, is a door knob, unless it's competitive play and agreed upon.

So you were winning, made a mistake and your opponent took advantage of it.
Sure, I was a few hours late, but its X-mas
That's what holiday jokers are for. You chose not to use it.

I see from your profile that you exceeded the time limit on 13 out of your last 43 games (30%) and OP is only somewhat better at 6 out of their last 36 games. Perhaps you could consider playing games with time controls you can consistently meet? It looks like you're the one creating the games. Why do you create games with time controls you don't meet nearly 1/3 of the time?

BTW, you agreed to be kicked for exceeding time when you joined a game with a time limit. The fact that you have a poor reputation from exceeding time so frequently is a clue that the the creators of the site intended the time controls to be met. If that wasn't they case, they wouldn't penalize users for not staying within the agreed upon time bounds.

The entire comment reads as very self-centered. If other people don't follow some arbitrary rule you made up instead of the rules imposed by the site, they're bad people and worthy of scorn, but if you inconvenience someone because they thought that you would play within agreed upon time bounds and finish a game by a specific time, that carries zero weight for you. It's all about how you feel. Perhaps the reasons that people choose to play games with time bounds might become clearer to you if you thought about the other player?

No dispute.

It's hard to characterize not using something as a choice if someone doesn't even know it exists. I know about holiday jokers, and even then it still took me a solid 10 minutes poking around my profile and other places before I found one place where it tells you about them (click your upper-right avatar, then "View all current tables" at the bottom of the panel, then "Time Jokers available" in the upper-right).

Maybe you can find them somewhere else. Maybe they are mentioned when it's your turn in a turn-based game. I'll look next time I have to make a move.

But there is no discussion of them in the FAQ, and it wouldn't surprise me if many, if not most, players don't even know about them.

But, as always, of course the sure fire way to not get expelled is not letting your clock go negative. Using a time joker is just one way to achieve that.

That's one way of looking at it I suppose! A pretty sad and weak one sure, but it is definitely a way... I did not make a mistake by the way, it was Christmas and decided to put family over BGA. That there are people that rather spend their time on BGA on X-mas instead, kicking players from a friendly game is their decision.

Sure. But note for most of the world Christmas is just December 25 (or not even that, if they use a different calendar). And even those for whom it has any significance, they may not have anything better to do (no family or close friends, stuck somewhere else, work obligations...).

It's funny and pathetic that you completely ignored the fact that you timed out in 30% of your games. Yeah, you deserve to be kicked every single time. The rules and time limits are set for a reason. Time isn't arbitrarily added on to a game just because you feel it should. If you can't take your turns in time, then don't play the games.

Well, you can have your opinion of course, but I suppose our definitions of pathetic differ a bit. 😄 I found the situation I described in my initial comment quite 'pathetic', but it's always good to hear other people's perspective. I'm not on BGA for that long and apparently I'm not taking these games as serious (yet) as many people on here seem to take them. Regarding the 30% of games timed out, the vast majority of those where with two players I actually know IRL and expulsion would never be an option with those players, no matter the amount of time exceeded. I do see/learned now that other, unknown players, take the time bank very seriously and may/will use it as a means to 'win' so I countered this by only starting turn-based games now with an even longer turn time. Usually I'll play a lot of moves per day, but I want to have the possibility to prioritize real life with FT job, busy family life, sports. I needed to make.this adjustment and havent timed out since I believe.

I get frustrated with players who use their time on most turns because I get easily distracted. Particulaly with ARK Nova, a game has taken over 2 hours with 3 people and that becomes boring, that ending the game was a relief.

What you call bad sportsmanship, I call it finding my sanity. Unless the player has said they are having difficulties or generally are playing well, I use the opportunity to hit the expulsion button when they go into the red around 20+ seconds - Thats what it's there for. 10/10 players will speed up and make decisions well within their time to get themselves into the black.

In a live game I imagine you would be told to speed up and stop stuffing around.
