“Exploding Kittens” is disturbing

Post by LPinkS »

I know that I am abnormally sensitive to these things, but I find the whole concept of exploding kittens very disturbing. I find myself avoiding the page where it is being promoted, simply because I don’t want that visual image in my mind.

I'd normally totally agree with you, I don't find anything the slightest bit funny when it comes to animal suffering, but I have played this game before, and it is actually, for the most part, rather amusing.

There are only four cards of exploding kittens (in the original edition) and in each case it's usually because of cats being in utterly impossible situations and their own mischievous behaviour, getting into places they're not supposed to be and setting off a nuclear warhead or mixing volatile chemicals, for example. 💥❗

Each Exploding Kitten card is a two-panel comic, the top panel showing, for instance, kitty struggling to pull out the pin on a grenade, then the bottom panel showing a drawing of a house blowing up. It's all very cartoonish and silly and ultimately pretty harmless, I think.

Remember, this is from somebody who usually DETESTS any "humour" involving the mere idea of animal suffering or cruelty to animals. Even if it's actually a pretty 'clever' joke, I still don't laugh. To be honest I find the the theme of Secret Hitler to be in poorer taste than this. I don't want to play that one and nor will I play any game themed on slasher movies or 'torture p 0 r n' movies. Or the production/serving of alcohol.

But to each their own. 🤷‍♂️

I find zoos disturbing. Animals should not be kept in cages for our amusement and for us to gawk at. I have no problem with seeing Ark Nova on the site.
Colonialism was a horrific period in history filled with atrocities. I have no problem with Catan or any other colonizing board game being on the site.
War is filled with horrors. gestures broadly
Capitalism is destroying the planet. gestures broadly

They're board games. It's fine. None of the images you see advertising Exploding Kittens on the site are gruesome.

--Yes, they do, because that is the way the food-chain works. That's not the same as being amused by an animal exploding. And yes, I know I am super sensitive, but I just find it distasteful.

You can always bookmark somewhere else, like your profile page or game lobby, and just skip the front page news.

You're right. I just find it creepy. And again, I am super sensitive. I was traumatized by the movie Old Yeller. LOL.

I totally thought that you were headed for New York Zoo, there...
