How to chose which world power u play when going solo ?

Post by Tristan107 »

In the PDF rules, it says :

"Everyone begins with 5 cards that are unique to their World Power."

"Solo, World Powers used : Any (see Reference card)" which means u should be able to pick among "Majority World, Europe, US and China" starting projects, am I wrong ?

Is it a temporary limitation in BGA adaptation ?

That's not how the rules work

Sorry... Yes, you're wrong. No, it's not a limitation of the BGA adaptation, nor is it temporary. It's a misprint in the rules. Solo has its own "world power" that it plays as. The solo world power tells you precisely which cards to start with.

If you take a look at the physical game's components, it's obvious. (If the online rules have been silently updated since then, which is possible, the BGA adaptation doesn't automatically update to follow.)

It has always been stated like this on the table from page 1 of the v1.0 rules, see :
https://www.daybreakgame.org/assets/doc ... k_v1.0.pdf
and :
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/319398 ... ject-cards

It may look contradictory with the table on page 35 though. This is how the designer "Tom Lehman" explains the variants using the different world powers in solo : https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/319472 ... rld-powers

Good clarifications.

The first thread you provided has a good explanation of how solo should be referring to the reference card, which tells exactly which cards are used for setup. Tom Lehmann, who is not the designer (but he is a great designer for different games), gave a link from that thread to the second one you mentioned, in which he recommends some variants.

It's pretty rare for house rules and unofficial variants to be included in BGA games. They need to all receive publisher approval, for starters. As you've noted, the variants are not present in this game and, yes, the rulebook is contradictory with respect to its setup.

Yes, exactly.

Can u generally get in touch with the designer when the written rules are contradictory ? Or are they reluctant to answer your questions ?

I think you've done a great job implementing Daybreak but it's really not very popular compared to similar games like "Race for the galaxy" and "Terraforming mars". Maybe some cheap variety additions in the solo mode would attract more ppl.

If you have seen the physical game, you would know "any (see reference card)" does not mean "you can use any of 4 world powers as written".
There is a solo setup reference card, and the setup uses those values instead:

(from https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/daybreak/)

The world power you select does not matter at all.
In the BGG post you linked, Tom Lehmann does not mention possible solo contradictions in the rulebook. It's just a variant suggestion.

It depends on the designer. CMYK was very responsive when we were developing the adaptation. Matteo Menapace, in particular, was very hands on with the process. A lot of times, publishers don't know what they don't know. None of us is aware of a contridiction until after it's gone to print. When this things arise, the designer usually provides the requested clarification.

We haven't reached out with new questions since completing the adaptation. At this point, we're maintaining it as volunteers, but we don't have any plans for new features.

Kayven > Ok, thanks for your explanations.

ufm > The contradiction is between this :
"Everyone begins with 5 cards that are unique to their World Power."
and this :
"Solo, World Powers used : Any (see Reference card)" (page 1)

The contradiction is not pointed by this : https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/319472 ... rld-powers but by the other link I provide : https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/319398 ... ject-cards

The reason is simple. Each world power has a separate player mat, but solo doesn't have its own.

Ufm is correct. The rules aren't telling you to choose a place to place your cubes. As he said earlier, this is obvious if you look at the physical game.

It sounds like you've never seen the physical game? Try finding a copy and giving it a play. You'll appreciate just how much BGA is automating, such as this setup.

Meanwhile, Ufm, there is still a conridiction in the rulebook. It's not this solo setup, but a discrepancy on, I believe, the 3-player setup.
