How to return coins if I have too many to make next move?

If you have too many (more than ten) you will be prompted to choose what to return before you can proceed.

You're saying "too many to make next move" which makes me think you want to return coins _before_ you have too many. Like, maybe you have 8, and you know if you take 3 more you'll have to return one. So just take 3 coins, and then you'll have 11 and the game will prompt you to return one.
