Rule Question - Play wild card

If I have a black wildcard - must I play it or can I opt to take a card?
There have been a couple of games where I'm down to two, play a swap hands for example and the next player immediately goes out.
Rules PDF does not mention - just checking if this is "bad form" or not.

There is no 'bad form' in what moves you choose to make,and I think you can opt to take a card.
