I don't understand the turn limit feature

Post by hudony »

Hi,

Sorry if I sound a bit stupid but I just don't get the time limit concept when creating a game.

If I create a game with 4 turns per day, does it means I will have maximum 6 hours to play a turn or is it less segmented and I rather have 24 hours to do my 4 turns, no matter the time between every one?

Also, If I go beyond that, I have access to time ranges. If I select 9-21h, does it use my timezone according to the city I have selected in my profile? If so, is it translated for other people joining from other timezone?

Thank you!

There will be a clock that tells you how much time you have. Unless you always spend 6 hours for every move, you will have more than that amount of time for most moves (usually much more, because you start with more than 6 hours).

4 moves per day is the theoretically maximum moves you will ever have to make without running out of time, but you will rarely be in danger of running out of time making fewer moves. A mandatory 4 moves per day for you would only happen if you first run your clock to 0 time + 1 second to make a move, and then your opponents all instantaneously all make their moves and start your clock running again and you proceed to let your clock to to near zero before moving again, and this cycle kept repeating. This is effectively physically impossible from a practical standpoint.

Think instead of 4 moves per day being the number of moves everyone at the table collectively will make per day if everyone uses almost all their time on each move. In practice most games move faster than that, but slower than 4 moves per day per person. Unless someone uses multiple holiday jokers....grrrrr.

As for time zones, everyone sees it in the time zone BGA thinks they are in based on their device's clock setting. So 0900‐>2100 for you may be 1300->0100 for someone else.

However if you play four moves per day, you must be ready to play four moves a day.
As meeplelowda says it's uncommon that this is the case, but if you meet fast players you might be obliged to.
It happened to me a few times.

Technically the way it works is as follows

-) You start with a time bank of 24 hours

-) When it is your turn the the clock runs and your time bank decreases

-) When you make a move SIX hours are added to your time bank. However your time bank can NEVER EXCEED 24 hours. So if you have
21 hours on your clock and you make a move, your time bank will replenish to 24 hours, not more.

If you met fast playing people three moves per day might not be sufficient.

Say you make a move at 10.pm (and gain 6 hours) and the other guys replay within 30 minutes.
Then you get back at 7am and make another move (you have lost 8,5 hours). The net time loss is 2.5 hours. Again the other guys reply within
half an hour. You gain another SIX hours
Then you get back at 2pm and make another move (you have lost 6,5 hours). The net time loss is 0.5 hours.
Again the other guys reply within half an hour. You gain another SIX hours.
At this point you get back at 10pm and restart the cycle. It's another 1.5 hours net time loss.

Adding up everything is a net time loss of 4.5 hours, which means that after 4/5 days at this rate you will start running into troubles.
This might be uncommon, but if the other player have notifications on and are used to reply asap when it's their turn it's not impossible.

Thanks to the time bank you have some flexibility and if you have a tough day and can connect just once you can survive. However in the long
run you must be ready to play four moves per day (again due to the time bank you are rather flexible about the play time, if you let
ten hours between two moves you can easily recover). Usually it will not be necessary, but sooner or later you will end up in a game which requires it.

You must be ready to make 4 moves per day, but you should not expect the table to be that fast, you should expect it to be 4 "total moves" per day, so for a 4-player table, don't expect to make more than 1 move per day.

What I mean is that if you're able to play 4 moves per day, you should never run out of time. If you're not able, you may still be fine, but then that depends on the other players.

If the table goes slower than 4 total moves per day, someone will probably run out of time. If it goes faster, someone could still be running out of time, but then it depends on the details.
