King cannot be the facedown card

Hello,

I thought that when youre the king selecting from card roles at the start of the game the King cannot be the face down card, and must be available.

Is that true or have i played the game in real-life wrong?

It was my understanding that for the first circle around, the king can be facedown so that folks have to guess, otherwise everyone would take the queen next.

This rule seems to be in effect.
Depending on the number of players and whether or not character 9 is used, there are character cards that are discarded on the front, which are marked in black.
