Secret hanabi restriction

Post by huahuo1hao »

I'm going to share with you a fun way to play hanabi, the idea came from Orchid, if you find it interesting, you can try it.
Each player needs to follow the same additional restriction in a game,it can be that "you can't directly clue your next player", or that "you can't do the same move(clue/discard/play) two turns in a row", or it can be "you cannot discard cards if you can see ANY card that is unmarked and that would be playable right know. (You can always discard at-will if you have zero clue tokens)",or it can be "you cannot play cards if they were marked in the last round",or it can be "you cannot play cards if you discarded last turn",and more.
Orchid's idea is that each player in the game needs to get a secret restriction from the site“https://perchance.org/e6dtm5lj3r” and strictly follow it, the goal of the game is not only to get 30 points, but also to guess as much as possible what the restriction of your teammates is, I think this gameplay is very difficult, so I played the easy version, which is the version I mentioned above, and it will be more interesting to play than the normal game, but what you need to do is clearly indicate your play in the table information, and ask each player if they agree to the game before it starts, if they don't, the game can't start.
This is most likely not original to me or Orchid, and some people may have already played it this way, and I just want to share a gameplay here.
If you have anything to add to the above gameplay, please comment on my post, I will read each comment carefully, thank you, and have fun

I appreciate the credit, but masterofbluff actually taught me about secret convention ages ago, after I asked about her reference to it on her page description. I'm unsure who the original creator of the gameplay or website is.

I have never actually played a full game of secret convention; I just enjoy trying out various gameplay, but also not yet willing to trudge through the UI of .live. Your adaptation seems like a good way to learn the different restrictions on the site before fully investing and having to guess others' a secret convention without knowing what the options might be! Send me an invite if you find a table of willing (and respecful) players. 🙃

Seems ridiculous. I for one, won't participate in this. If you've gotten so bored of the game, move on to something new.

as i said to someone else if people start teaching this hanabi will get even worse because some people will think it's normal rules and old people will think they don't know how to play.

if u have ever played on hanablive (it has a much better UI and many cool variants) they have a custom option called "detrimental characters". each player has a (different) restriction on actions they can/can't do, and every player can also see what restrictions every other player has.

In 2020 we had about 30 competitions on Saturdays and Sundays, with an average of 8 teams playing 3-5 identical decks. Many of these competitions had a unique “special rule” that we made up. The special rules were somewhat harsh, like “you can’t clue 1, 2, and 5”, or “your team can only clue 1 color all game”. The result is that teams would practice during the week, and find clever alternative ways to clue, and surprisingly still get a lot of 30s.

Currently, I just play with the same conventions every game and try not to make mistakes, just like everyone else. But I miss those competitions and thinking outside the box about conventions. I have never since seen so many players improve so rapidly, and enjoy being innovative every week. I look forward to doing it again sometime.
