How can I find posts in a forum which I have made or commented on?

Post by Cos- »

I often find myself wanting to find an old form post where I got into a discussion at some point in the past, but I don't remember its title exactly, nor how long ago it was. I pretty much always remember which forum it was in, but once I go to that forum topic, if it's active, finding the old post is really really hard. It would be much easier if I could filter it down to a list of all posts that I myself either made or commented on, but I don't see a way to do something like that. Is it possible?

Maybe someone has already asked this question here in the general Discussions forum, but the search feature here is atrociously horrible, so I wouldn't be able to find it. (of course, the search being so unbelievably bad is the reason why I'm asking this question in the first place, because with a decent search feature I'd be able to find those posts I'm looking for by searching for words related to the topic of the discussion)

At the top of the forum page click the cog beside the search bar for advanced search. Put you username in the author slot and it will give you everything

Ahh, thanks! That cog looks like a settings icon so I didn't think it would actually lead me to a search form, so never tried it.

Even better, it lets you combine searching for posts by a username (your own or someone else's) with key words, date ranges, specific sub-forums, whether the key words are in the title of the post or the body, etc.

It's a powerful tool with one exception: there are certain "stop words" that can't be used as search terms, like "ELO." And despite the silly conspiracies around it, it's not to prevent discussion of a topic, but to avoid overburdening the database.

In fact, I just used it to find this post I made in Official Announcements by searching all my posts in that sub-forum that include the word "stop":
It's not suspicious. Many search systems have "stop words" that are ignored because they would produce too many hits, tax the database, and/or not yield narrow enough results. Common stop words are things like articles, prepositions, and pronouns. But stop words can be specific to the context of a particular site:
For example, if your product database is comprised of all products related to scented candles, you can think about adding “scented” and “candle” as stop words as it would return every product on your site when searching.
Other BGA stop words include "player," "game," and "arena."

It doesn't look like anybody's mentioned it, but under every user's avatar next to a forum post, where it says how many posts the user has made, that number is a link to all of their posts.

Yes, this is by far the easiest way if you just want to see everything. But in some mobile browsers you may have to tick "Desktop site" or "Desktop view" or the equivalent setting to see that.

I don't think it needs to be your last post, any post will do. But since the OP had posted on this thread, it was pretty easy to do (not so much if you haven't posted recently).
