Allow auto-confirm when equal but not better

Post by Cos- »

I play a lot of turn-based space base, and I never enable auto-confirm when "better" because I want to be able to see when there are two different actions that yield different things. This helps me get a better sense of the effect of the cards I played on previous turns, and the different options they result in.

Also, because it's not 100% clear how the "better" algorithm works, I don't necessarily know what it will do in every situation. Maybe, for example, I'd rather place a cube that I can use to get 3 gold, than choose an option that gives 10 gold. Would the game thing 10 is better than 3 and choose the ten? Maybe not, I'm not sure. And even if someone told _me_ how it works in every edge case, that wouldn't communicate the same information to all new players. (Besides, I think I'd still want to see those situations myself even if I did know how the "better" algorithm would choose every time)

Any turn based space base game in which I or someone else who feels similarly participates, could go more quickly if we were able to tell the game to auto-select only when two actions are exactly equal. This tends to happen a lot in the early game, when you have a lot of 1 gold or 2 gold red sectors - often a pair of die rolls will let you choose between two 1-gold sectors, for example. We could skip waiting for players for these cases, even if those players don't want the "better" auto-select.

I made this suggestion 6 months ago, but the developer closed it because they misunderstood and thought that since the "auto-select when better" feature already covers the "when equal" case, that meant it was implemented: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=92626

What they didn't seem to understand is that some of us just don't want to use the "better" feature at all, no matter how "good" it may be. We want to see whenever there's a meaningful choice to be made - it's part of the game experience we don't want to give up. But as a result of not giving us a way to choose to auto select when equal, and only when equal, it causes lots of turn based games to be unnecessarily slowed down.

I've opened feature request again for this: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=154764 - please vote for it.

Remember, even if you yourself are happy with "better" and always use it, this feature can still help your turn based games go faster, if there's ever any other player in your game who hesitates to enable the "better" option. Whether they do it because they don't trust the "better" algorithm, or they don't know how it will act, or they just want to see their choices even if they think it will make good choices - whatever their reason, some people won't choose "better" and they may be in your game. Giving them this option will make your game go faster.

If you don't trust 'better', why would you trust 'equal'?

First of all, like I said, it's not just about trust, there's also not knowing what it will do, and most importantly the desire to _see_ the cases where I have a choice between different options.

But as for the specific question you asked: because equal is completely straightforward and simple, just like allowing auto confirm when there is only one option. If two possible actions give you exactly the very same yield, they are equal. It's much closer to the auto confirm when there's only one action option, than it is to "better". In both "only one" and "equal", there is no actual choice to be made.
