Why a red thumb???

Post by Glaurung »

Hi guys. I played more than 300 games, always saying "good luck" or some nice words to promote a good mood. I've never had any problem with anybody and I usually give a green thumb to everybody who plays with me. I helped the beginners to understand the game, and I've never given any red thumb. I contributed in translations and I have a game to develop in the back of my mind. Because of that I've received 284 green thumbs.

But yesterday I realized that I had one RED THUMB!! Why??? I know that we are not allowed to know who gave it but it's really really really unfair and I'm upset because of that. I know that the percentage is low but this is not a quantitative question but qualitative. I suppose that some guy got angry after losing against me, or he/she is just doing it for fun but this is not my fault.

In order to avoid things like that I have some suggestions:
- Adding some text when you give a red thumb and that text could be visible for who receives the bad rate.
- It also would be great adding the possibility to revoke this red thumb or to audit it.
- Search for the systematic "bad raters" or, at least, make the number or proportions of green/red thumbs visible in your profile

What do you think?

Thanks

I have a handful of red thumbs with no idea why, I've never been rude to anyone.
I wouldn't mind a reason.

I'm sure I got one recently for making a play another person thought was a bad move. I didn't realize that was so offensive! Luckily, a 1600-7 ratio won't hurt me.

If someone plays too slow for you, or too badly for you, you should make a note and not play with them. If they are incredibly rude (someone once cursed at me after I beat them in a close game) then you should CONSIDER the red thumb. And maybe give them another chance some day.

Thanks for your comments, guys. Although my ratio is also really really low, it hurts me anyway. I don't want to think that somebody could rate me bad without any reason. Personally I think that the number of green/red thumbs that you give should be also visible for everyone. If so, we could also differentiate between the "good mood" players and the "systematic/random bad raters"

While I do like the idea of showing the ratio of thumbs given, this could also lead to abuse.

Step 1. Record the number of red thumbs given by all opponents at the start of a game.
Step 2. When you receive a red thumb, look at whose number of red thumbs given increased.
Step 3. Retaliate against the specific player....

Yeah, no system is perfect under all circumstances. But in this case, I think a broken system is better than no system at all.

Hmm, I really like the idea of a ratio too. You're right about the abuse though. Perhaps not updating the info in real time. At the end of every month, update the "Red Thumbs given" stat.

OMG! I received again a red thumb!! And it was in one of the two games that I recently played and won. It's really frustrating not knowing who gave it to you. I don't need to know the reason because it's fairly clear. In those games I didn't say anything but greetings and farewell like always; of course they don't know how to lose

IMHO, the red thumb must be revisited by the developers. A red thumb means that somebody doesn't recommend to play with me. The only fact of thinking about that makes me feel angry

Or maybe you could just not worry so much about two red thumbs v 380 or so green thumbs. It's no different on here than in "real life" - there will always be those who don't like you. Those you ignore.

Have you ever ran out of time or quit a game? Maybe even collectively or trying to end the game without any points lost, etc.?

This is what I can think of. I have two red thumbs and I have quit a few games (I had to go do something, etc...) These might be some reasons why they gave you a red thumb...

If you don't have red thumbs that means you haven't played much here :D

I think good idea would be to make thumbs with expiration date - 1 year or maybe 6 months. Only minus I see would be returning to BGA after long absence because you would look like a newbie and could get into situation with only red thumbs (because you had bad luck to play first games with dumb people).

Also i like the idea of anonymous notification with the answer to question "Oh God, why me! Why I god red thumb!?"
