It's just good biz and good time for everyone involved. You can even have a main commentator in the main stream, 4p is far more inviting for casual viewers.
This may not be satisfying answer for you, but you just gotta trust the Ark Nova experts then 😉. For competitive top-level play, 2p Ark Nova is the most interesting, most balanced and most skilled player count - this is not a contested opinion, but simply the consensus. You can ask any strong player and nearly everyone would tell you exactly the same. 4p will never happen and we will not force it upon the players because nobody wants to play it, simple as that. It can be fun for casual games, but if you want high skill expression, then 2p is an absolute must.
I find 4 player, different maps, Marine Worlds the most enjoyable and interesting way to play Ark Nova. These settings do have more luck, but I think the skill level required to play well in this format is higher, so that somewhat mitigates the higher luck factor.

Since there's probably not enough interest for a tournament, I've created a one off 4 player marine worlds game with each player on a different map for master level players. It's turn based, so can't be live streamed, but an analysis after it concludes would be interesting.

Hope I can find 3 other master level players to join me :)

PS: Propaganda Panda, I'm a no-build-upgrade proponent like you! Sam's recent stats included all my first learning games where I usually upgraded build. I've only played around 100 games, so looking at my stats over my last 50 completed games, I upgrade build in 28% of games compared with you upgrading build in 30% of your last 50 completed games.

Oh, for sure! In no way did I want to imply that there is nobody out there who enjoys or even prefers Ark Nova aside of the established 2p meta, I should have worded it differently. We have 4p specialists like Tomoaki Tokunaga, and NY Steezy is a player who reached 600 by playing 3p only. I also know that lx_xlO--lo_oQl (aka boxer) is someone who likes playing 4p a lot and also finds it fairly skilled. And JDansp was of the opinion that Ark Nova is best at 3p, although I don't know if this still holds true.

Overall, the vast majority has a clear preference for 2p, which is why it makes sense as a format for big tournament, but I do think that 4p can offer challenging games with considerable skill expression. Your 4p MW game sounds interesting - I'll ask around and see if I can find other players who would be interested to play this!

(Also, love to see a fellow no-builder! :D I don't know how much you are in touch with the Ark Nova community, but us other top players are always in awe with your stats, they're one of a kind!)

Thanks for drumming up some interest Propaganda Panda! Looks like you managed to get lx_xlO--lo_oQl to join the game. Just need 2 more. Unfortunately the game was open for too long and BGA automatically closed it. I've recreated it as https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=622380501 just in case we can get enough players with your recruitment powers :D

Our 4 player Marine Worlds game with master level players is under way! We have

lx_xlO--lo_oQl (elo 746) on map 7a (Commercial Harbour)
JDansp (elo 728) on map 8a (Hollywood Hills)
Sir Fluffy (elo 745) on map 6a (Research Institute)
Propaganda Panda (elo 716) on map 3a (Silver Lake)

Propaganda Panda has taken an early lead by starting the game with Silver Lake, the money sponsors action card, and 3 appeal :)
