why penalty for leaving game??

Post by feli-pon »

I've received an email with
"PlayerXXXXX is running out of time on BGA Caverna table #608308692.
You may pass her turn and then continue playing or leave the game without penalty."

So I chose to leave the game, and later I see a penaty in my user for this game. Why?

The first thing it says you may do is "pass her turn," meaning expel the player from the game after they run out of time.

Let's break that down. They have to completely run out of time (the message says they are "running" out of time, not that they are out of time), and be "passed" or expelled from the game (step 1) ). Both of those things must happen first.

"And then" you have the option to 2) keep playing or 3) leave. If you just jump straight to 3) leaving the game, then it is you who has quit.

Here's the game log:
Sivilina quit the game after someone else quit the game (= no penalties).
Sivilina is the only person with the negative clock currently, so I'm assuming that's who was running out of time. The "someone else" in that log message was you. You didn't expel Sivilina from the table first. And the log doesn't say Sivilina left until almost 12 hours after you quit. As the message said, they were merely "running out of time," i.e., close to being out of time, when you received the email.

Of course, the biggest question is why on earth does BGA send this message about running out of time to other players? There's no action they can take until that person actually runs out of time. Maybe it's so they can reach out in a friendly manner to remind them about the game. Who knows?

It makes sense to have a penalty for leaving a game.
What I dislike is having a penalty for technical issues.
I got a nasty penalty including removing all of my arena points in King Of Toyko because I suffered a brief power outage.
BY the time I was able to get back on the game...Including me trying to log in from my cell phone and then turning the computer back on and opening BGA backup, other players had booted me due to timing out.

Would be nice if players disconnected from the internet via lack of electricity or technical issues would not get a penalty for timing out.

1) How is BGA supposed to vet what the cause of your disconnection was? Contact your power company? Diagnose this vaguely described "technical issue"? If so, how? Just take your word for it?

I'm not being flippant. At least once a month someone complains about getting expelled for something that "wasn't their fault" without providing any suggestion whatsoever about how BGA is supposed to tell what was your fault and what wasn't. When there is something on their end they can see caused a widespread disruption, they will and have nullified associated penalties. Other than that, how are they suppose to deal with dozens to 100s of individualized claims?

2) Assuming there's an answer to 1), what do you estimate the cost of this vetting would be?

It's the Internet, so I can't tell if you're joking. It just says they've gone offline, i.e., their computer is no longer communicating with the BGA server. It doesn't say WHY they've gone off line, nor, most importantly, can BGA know why they've gone offline. And it's the why that matters, if you're going to say they should evaluate fault.

Sure, maybe they've "gone offline" because of a power outage. But maybe they've gone offline because their boss caught them playing games instead of working on the monthly report or their parent found them playing games instead of doing homework.

Also, people have claimed that bad cellphone reception isn't their fault. Maybe, but if it happens 3 games in a row and you keep trying to play when it's clearly an issue at the moment, it then it becomes your fault for continuing in those circumstances. That will also show as "so and so has gone offline."

Thanks for the clarification Meeplelowda, I thought it was simpler, and I'm not sure how the timer works. I thought it was just a matter of choosing one option or the other. Thanks.
