Description blank for tables

Post by playaplat »

https://boardgamearena.com/#!bug?id=156774

I wish we would have some description/message blank for created tables, in order to specify what kind of players we are looking for or chat preferred or not. And if that description is highly visible and acknowledgable would be even better.

for Saboteur 2 (expansion), I would like to mention in that blank that "only people who know rules %100 are welcome" so first timers would not join and ruin.

Ranking filter doesnt mean anything. I have seen some people joined with 200 ELO point and said its his first time for Saboteur 2...those ELO are actually coming from Saboteur 1.

or Maybe you can seperate both versions on platform so at least I could apply ELO filter

I use the platform to have some fun however with this long ongoing issue started frustrating and feels like waste of time now, contemplating not to use this platform anymore sadly. I hope someone can help

You can add a description, when you click on "modify" next to "(no presentation yet)".

While this is true:
1) Many people don't read anything when joining a table. They are looking for the most frictionless way to start playing, and that means ignoring reading through extra text. That's how we keep getting complaints that someone joined a game with a variant they don't know/like then the other players wouldn't let them abandon, etc.
2) I'm not sure people joining using the Automatic match making mode can see that at all, and even if they can see it refer back to 1).

That‘s so true. The original suggestion was to „have some description/message blank for created tables“. We already have that. Ok, it is not „ highly visible and acknowledgable“. What would you suggest do improve to make people read and respect free text restrictions?

If I had the answer to making human beings do responsible pro-social things....I'd be Elon rich.

Could there be an extra button added so that as well as clicking to join the game, players also click to say yes I know this game is in this language and has these expansions / is being played in this way?

I would definitely appreciate this - from both angles. I'm fairly new here and am dyslexic and have only just realised that there is a list with descriptions of the game inside the game lobby - luckily I noticed it just before clicking to join a word game being conducted in Russian!

I would also appreciate knowing game styles eg in Carcassonne there are two very different ways of playing (either competitively or more cooperatively) and it's fine that people have different approaches - but they're not compatible, and I find it quite stressful being stuck in a game that is not fun.

Yes there could be something like this. There is a button that you must acknowledge when you're playing a beta game, for example. Also, I believe there is an unresolved submission in the suggestions database to add a confirmation button for people to acknowledge that they are aware of the playing hours for fast turn-based games. But BGA priorities recently have been on making sure the servers don't melt down, as they should be.

This is a different issue. BGA implements rules as defined by and/or approved by the owner of the game. There are no rules governing the supposed cooperative variant of Carcassonne. So let's say BGA puts a button saying "This game is being played in touchy-feely jigsaw puzzle mode: I agree," then at some point in the game a player places a tile in a way that is considered "aggressive." Who is going to police that? Are we going to take the offender to Carcassonne court? The only rule defined and/or approved by the owner of the Carcassonne stating where tiles can be placed is that the edge of the newly placed tile must match all the edges it touches (excluding tiles with additional rules like river tiles). Period. So such a button would serve no purpose other than giving some players a false sense of protection from this game play, which would lead to them feeling even worse if the cooperative norm is violated (in their opinion).

Cool!

Fair enough!
jigsaw puzzle mode
Uuffff!! How to spoil a game with one phrase!
It's not a jig saw puzzle - playing it cooperatively is about creating a landscape that is different every time.
It's about connecting with people and having fun.
It's about imagining being out in a beautiful world and travelling to different places - just as I do when I'm creating a forest, an orchard, a train route in some of my other favourite games. I'm currently unable to get out and about thanks to long covid, or to meet up with friends to play in person, and being able to play these games here online is huge. But not if I get stuck in a game with a very competitive player, and I get so stressed I get ill.
This topic - the different ways of playing - has come up a few times both in this forum and on other forums so please don't dismiss it. I do appreciate it's impossile to police - I'm not asking for that. I'm just asking for this to be included in the above suggestion - that there be a way to let potential players know before joining whether this is a competitive or a cooperative game. That's all.

For cooperative Carcassonne -- or anything with house rules that aren't implemented on BGA -- I'd suggest creating a group with a really obvious name (like "Cooperative Carcassonne") and limiting the table to people in the group. Invite people you've played that style with to the group & post about it on the Carcassonne forum and so forth to explain your house rules and find the community that wants to play in that style. Setting your tables to friendly mode will help discourage aggressively competitive players, too.

I wish I had any sort of solution for people not reading the table description/options/playing hours/house rules. That's a far bigger problem than tables on BGA, and a great frustration to many UI/UX designers. Auto-join makes it a little bit worse (especially when games have new expansions and options added), but the not-reading problem is everywhere.

Thank you - this is a great idea!
